Allusion serve the purpose of foreshadowing that enriches reading. Also they help us better understand in a different way.

The allusion in this song us when Taylor says, "Romeo save me, they're trying to tell me how to feel". It refers to the play Romeo and Juliet when people try to tell them they are unable to see each other and tell them they cant have feelings for each other. 
Another example of an allusion in pop culture is the show "Phineas and Ferb". Hamlet, Act One Scene Two Line 7: Hamlet
In this line Hamlet is alluding to the bible, specifically he is alluding to the garden of Adam and Eve.
"O heart, lose not thy nature; let not ever
The soul of Nero enter this firm bosom"
Hamlet, Act Three Scene Two Line 6: Hamlet
In this line Hamlet is referring to how he poisoned his brother who killed his father and he is thinking of doing the same to his uncle. This alludes to politics.
"And pity, like a naked newborn babe,
Striding the blast, or heaven's cherubim"
Macbeth Act One Scene Seven
This line alludes to a newborn baby being pure. The baby will either be protected by the Garden of Eden or will not and be full of sin and bad. This alludes to the  bible.
"Darest thou, Cassius, now Leap in with me into this angry flood And swim to yonder point?"
Julius Caesar Act One Scene Two
This line alludes to mythology. It is said that Cassius was an ancient god of mythology. It shows how Caesar was speaking to Cassius.
"The spirit that I have seen
May be the devil: and the devil hath power"
Hamlet Act Two Scene Two
This line alludes to the bible. It explains how the ghost Hamlet saw can be the devil trying to play mind tricks on him.
