Israel evokes pride as the Jewish homeland, yet also discomfort around policies conflicting with some Jews' values. Attachment competes with critique; allegiance strains against activism. At the heart is a desire to connect to Israel's rich history and culture while upholding justice, navigating joy and pain intertwined in the journey of Jewish peoplehood.

In essence, many Jews feel a profound, multilayered connection to Israel that can include both love and frustration, belonging and alienation. There are often competing loyalties and perspectives that create internal conflict. But exploring this struggle is part of engaging with Israel in a meaningful way

The concept of "return" presents challenges in the average Day School and certainly in the Synagagogue school classroom. It can imply Jewish life in the diaspora is incomplete or insignificant compared to Israel. Instead of focusing on return, we should focus on strengthening all forms of contemporary Jewish living, whether in Israel or across the globe, appreciating both for their unique contributions. It begs the question: what is my relationship to Israel other than moving there? What does Israel need from me, and what is my place?

When students feel empowered to respectfully voice uncertainties, critiques and contradictions, brave spaces can foster critical thinking, empathy and intellectual growth. In my classroom, I strive to create a brave space culture where openness, vulnerability and constructive dialogue provides opportunities to grapple with complex issues and re-examine assumptions through multiple lenses.

The key difference is that brave spaces move beyond just emotional safety to provide a forum for grappling with complex, controversial topics in a thoughtful, constructive way. The focus is on providing support to actively confront difficult questions and ideas. I believe this approach allows for profound learning and growth.

Dr. Zohar discussed how Jewish identity has shifted over time from embodying the underdog narrative of victimhood to being perceived by some as aggressors. As the story of Jews as victims challenged by discrimination changes, it creates an existential challenge for the Jewish people to redefine their identity and narrative going forward.

The concept of Jews being perceived as aggressors relates to antisemitic propaganda, which often demonizes and portrays Jews as a dangerously powerful threat. This reflects a historical pattern where antisemitism simultaneously casts Jews as victims of aggression who must be suppressed, as well as aggressors who wield disproportionate control and must be stopped. There is a contradictory interplay where antisemitism reinforces narratives of Jews as both powerless victims and all-powerful villains.

Antisemitic rhetoric plays on this dual victim/aggressor motif about Jews. It presents them as passive victims of violence who should submit, or as active aggressors who must be dominated. This serves to reinforce narratives that justify antisemitic attitudes and systems of oppression.

In analyzing the presentations from both Michael Soberman and Dr. Zohar Raviv, I identified several connecting themes around the learner, the educator, and educational approaches to Israel. Key points that resonated with me include the emphasis on seeing students holistically, avoiding oversimplified narratives, fostering identity development, and creating “brave spaces” for open dialogue and perspective taking. I was struck by the focus on relational, learner-centered methods and the role of the educator in guiding, not imposing, discovery for students. Extra food for thought came from discussions on navigating inherited trauma, grappling with complex identities, and positive disruption of assumptions that limit compassion. I found many parallels between their perspectives on empowering learners, nurturing growth, and introducing thoughtful complexity. Their talks provided much insight into impactful educational practices.
