Voting Rights March 1965

The Selma to Montgomery Marches took place in 1965 in Alabama. The goal of these protests was to demand equal voting rights for African Americans. The first march resulted in violence from state troopers who used tear gas and weapons to attack the peaceful protestors. Many people were in disbelief since it was broadcasted which ultimately led to another march. The final march was led by MLK where the Voting Rights Act was officially passed. Ultimately these marches were crucial in the American civil rights movement due to the fact that it brought more equality among citizens in the U.S. This monument is one of the reasons why we continue to fight for equality and justice.

This Supreme Court case declared segregation in public school unconstitutional. One case that led to this decision was when a little girl was denied access to an all-white elementary school in Kansas. This was ultimately a violation of the 14th amendment and ended the "separate but equal" paradigm from the Plessy V. Ferguson case. Segregation became legalized in the schools over the country. This milestone decision led a pathway for equal access for all people mindless of their race, gender, or disability.

Another significant case that was decided by the Supreme Court. Attention was brought to this case when a woman was denied an abortion in Texas due to the state's strict laws regarding abortion. The ruling in Roe V. Wade established that an abortion was a woman's constitutional right and was protected by the 14th amendment. This allows a woman the right to be able to make her OWN decisions on her OWN body including her reproductive system. The ruling was so pivotal because it allowed abortion to be legal across the country. Before this court case, women would have to seek illegal and unsafe procedures just to be able to access these abortion services. Although there are still ongoing debates on this topic, it is important that these rights be protected for women all around.
