When considering the English primary curriculum, I understand that students need to demonstrate a capacity to read, write, speak and listen as a core skill set. These skills become more complex as their education progresses, but at all levels students should be exposed to learning materials and activities that encourage them to create, reflect and critique.
Students should be encouraged to see literacy not as a class, but as a core skill that enables them to engage in other subjects, skills and relationships.
Furthermore, the English curriculum is not limited to the consumption and creation of printed texts or communication in textual english. The curriculum also allows for students to consider other forms communication may take, such as the interpretation of images, signs and symbols.
I have experience in identifying misconceptions, miscues and skills in my students, and have worked to correct and enhance student capacities within the curriculum requirements. I also have proficiency in assessing elements of the English curriculum in other subject areas.
I know and understand how to employ HITS / Practice Principles within my practice of teaching english as a primary specialisation.
I have had a brief experience observing teaching practices at a WELS centre, and have some understandings of the challenges faced by EAL students and how to support them.
Lastly, I know teaching has humanity and individualism at its heart, and so every lesson, interaction and learning activity should take into consideration the needs. pace, identity and skills of each student.

The curriculum approaches from multiple aspects of teaching/learning. But based on Vygotsky theory of scaffolding, the curriculum is too narrow in its approach and lacks a broad base for all students to excel. Its specificity for assessment is its short coming when learning. Specifically, physical education revolves around students physical ability and transition of mind to body. All students are biologically different and development differently yet they are assessed or taught via the same curriculum outline.

In regards to my specialisation within a primary school setting. There are four strands/areas within this subjects curriculum. These strands involve different aspects of the subjects required content knowledge, skills, practices and presentation. Although students are taught the theory and skills required to be able to produce their own work. The curriculum implies that teachers should encourage their students to use the knowledge and skills taught to experiment in ongoing folio work and produce final works.

I know that English is the foundation for all subject areas a child will develop knowledge within throughout their schooling and lifetime. It is a fundamental aspect in each individuals life from day one through different forms of communication and explanation. In terms of the national curriculum, there are 3 strands of English that are equally important and interrelate: language, literature and literacy. I enjoy this area of teaching and learning because there are so many tasks that can be used as opportunities to get to know your students formally and informally.

I know that each student comes from a different background, be it culturally, socio economic or family dynamic. Therefore, the way in which students comprehend and learn new concepts may be affected by these factors. The curriculum moves too fast for many of these children and many tend to be left behind. I know that standardised testing, like NAPLAN, has created a gap between schools from low and high socio economic areas. This potentially places students from low ses areas on the bottom. Many will struggle to understand new concepts, and this continues into their secondary years.

The curriculum itself is designed by the Government and entails the content that needs to be taught to students dependent on their year level and subject.. In regards to the English Curriculum, one of the three strands is Literacy. Literacy as a whole, lays down the foundation for all learning. Before commencing other subjects such as Maths or P,E it is important if not vital for students to have a good if not basic understanding about Literacy, Literacy includes things such as Speaking, Reading, Listening, and/or Writing. If students have not got this foundation set out for them it will be extremely difficult if not impossible to communicate their needs and wants. This also is the same for the teacher. More apparently there will be a barrier between the teacher and student. It is due to this that I have a passion for Literacy and hope to learn more about it and its application throughout the education system in order to support and help my future students.

I know that the curriculum aims to provide the student with the necessary building blocks in order to gain and achieve a higher level of understanding, not only within the school community, but to broader society. A foundational level of literacy is somewhat required before stemming into other areas of the curriculum, however, literacy is available to the students in almost every facet of their small world e.g. tv, cartoons, billboards, newspapers. Therefore providing the stepping stone to create meaning and expand understanding is the curriculums ultimate endeavour.

The curriculum is designed to help all young Australians to become successful, confident and creative individuals, it is sectioned into different learning areas (English, Maths, Science, Humanities and Social science, Art, Technology, Health and Language). The curriculum sets the standard for young people as they progress through school. I believe the most integral part of learning occurs in the younger years of a child’s life before they even begin their schooling and are tested/measured against the curriculum. Parents and carers are the foundation for a child’s healthy learning and development. Lots of time spent playing, talking, listening and interacting with these people help children to learn the skills they need for school. These include things like communicating, thinking, problem-solving, moving and being with other people and children.

The Health and Physical Education curriculum at a primary level aims to build on and support students knowledge to further develop their skills and making informed decisions relating to their health, wellbeing, safety and participation in physical activity. There will be students on different levels of learning and their ability to apply what they learn to the real world. Their socioeconomic status is a factor, what area they go to school in. Different schools have different resources and will explicitly teach Health separate to Physical Education whereas other schools teach it combined and the health aspect is not as present in their education than what it could be. Communication and developing personal skills and social skills plays a role in teaching this curriculum. I know that teaching any subject in the curriculum will be different with each group of students as each student has their own needs and hurdles to be able to learn and my classroom and teaching needs to be inclusive of this. I know that creating a safe space and environment is critical to my teaching but also my student's education.

With good English skills, students can become confident and competent individuals who can grow and thrive against challenges they face. Within one classroom, there are multiple levels of competency due to factors such as culture, home support etc. These can impact a students performance and overall confidence within themselves. The curriculum is designed to help individuals develop skills to overcome these challenges and sets standards for students as they embark on their schooling journey.

I also know that although the curriculum is separated into levels, this does not mean our classes are.

In Visual Arts, I know that students do not have much time dedicated to this subject during the week. Sadly, some people consider this subject to be useless. Students tend to use this time to 'relax', meaning they do not take the subject seriously. This could be influenced by social needs and expectations.
When looking at the Australian curriculum, Art is limited. There are so many gaps that teachers can slip through. It can either be a great opportunity for teachers to show off their creativity within the classroom (when delivering content) or it could also be a chance for teachers to misinterpret the meaning of the curriculum, resulting in misguidance.
Students also need time to create Artworks and absorb the knowledge. However, there is a time constraint, making it harder for teachers to even cover the surface of the subject.

Students should also be encouraged to become more active and to recognise the importance of these skills in the world

Previous placements have shown me that a lot of students struggle with confidence around learning new skills. Just knowing the curriculum isn't enough, knowing students and how they learn is important to help build their confidence and expand their knowledge.

The curriculum also allows for students to work with their peers in challenging tasks which then allows the students to reflect on their emotions throughout the activity to identify their feelings, as well as their peers.

I understand that English provides students with skills and knowledge that will support them in all aspects of their life. Students having sound knowledge of the English curriculum means that they have the capacity to read, write, listen and comprehend. The curriculum is designed to strengthen students skills, helping them build confidence and overcome potential barriers that may disrupt their learning. Students need to see English as more than just a subject, and something that has a large importance on their everyday life. I believe the English curriculum is set out to guide teachers in getting the best out of their students, providing them with many opportunities to develop important skills.

I know that in the English curriculum, student are exposed to a range of literary experiences - reading, writing, speaking and listening. The Victorian English curriculum is levelled, from Foundation through to Level 6. Students progress through these levels as they increase their knowledge and skill set, and move up through the levels in school. The English curriculum is made up of three strands: reading and viewing; listening and speaking, and writing. Under each three strands are then specific skills/content descriptors to describe what students SHOULD know or be able to do at each particular level.

I know that student welfare is rapidly becoming an important part of students every day needs. Although this is not "part of the curriculum" it is important to note that changes are being made to provide additional support, welfare and assistance to students of all grades and ages. In Victoria, especially with the introduction of social media starting as early as prep, it is imperative that more of an emphasis is placed around keeping students feeling safe, secure, settled and content at school. Introducing things such as mindfulness to morning home room or morning sessions as well as adding additional staff into the well being teams in schools will help to ensure that children are being kept safe and listened to at school.

The curriculum is the handbook to all content that is taught to students at all levels of schooling. Additionally, teachers can use the curriculum to identify student ability. Teachers work alongside the curriculum to develop activities that have identical content. Social Justice relates to the curriculum as students have not only content related descriptors that they will learn but imbedded in the descriptors are activities that allow students to socially explore learning with others and work on team building skills and leadership skills as well.
