Privacy Policy

The social media tool I have chosen is Snapchat. Snapchat is a mobile messaging application used to share photos, videos, text, and drawings (www.webwise.ie). There is one feature that makes Snapchat different from other forms of texting and photo sharing: the messages disappear from the recipient’s phone after a few seconds (www.webwise.ie).

Snapchat’s privacy policy is very solid and gives users controls that they might need to use the app without concerns. They allow the users to block unwanted users trying to connect with them and to only accept snaps from people from their friends list. Users can also report abuse, can turn off locations, report any inappropriate stories that may pop up in the “Story Explorer” and disable any geo-filters. But unfortunately there are still some privacy issues that can lead to problems.

The first one being, other people can save your snaps by simply screen-shotting their phone-screens. Although it does let the users know that a screenshot has been made, it doesn’t allow easy removal from the receiving end. Which is the first right from the 5 Rights outlined in Anderson (2017).
Digital Literacy should be promoted a lot more on Snapchat as children under the age of 18 can be more informed of the language of the web.
It’s a lot easier to subscribe to “Story Channels'' on snapchat and should be as easy to unsubscribe as well. Story Channels.
The right to know on Snapchat can be a grey area. A user can never really know if the person they are connecting with on Snapchat is a legitimate user and not just someone taking information from you. Creating Snapchat accounts should be a lot more of a difficult process instead of it being easier to set up.
