Bio: Our names are Steve and Nikki. We are twins and are currently in high School. We created this blog to document our mothers journey as she battles cancer. We wanted to create a space where we can get support from others out there who are facing similar family issues or can simply provide us with some information on this. Join us in our journey to Decode Cancer!

Dad said he would leave work early to make the game, I'm glad he's coming but I wish mom could make it and I wonder if we should just stay home. I still don't know what cancer really is and Nikki and I don't want to bug mom and dad, Can someone just tell me what exactly is cancer? #stressed #SOS PS: Mood for my soccer game shown in the picture!

Nikki Post #1: Our mom came back from her doctors appointment.. I have been taking charge of chores around the house to give her time to rest and relax. Dad gave me a copy of mom’s pathology report but it doesn’t make any sense to me. I can tell it has a lot of useful information but what is it used for?

How do I read it?

Steve Post #2: The info about genes and diagnostic tools you posted was interesting. I remember when we did genetics the teacher said mutations can be passed on. Does that mean I can have this gene? even if I did, only girls get breast cancer, right? there's no way I could get breast cancer. Mom is going to see a genetic counselor. dad is taking off work to go with her. Nikki keeps saying we need to be helping them out more, so she asked them if we could do anything to help. I was worried they would ask us to go the appointment with them. I want to be there for my parents, but I hate hospitals. they creep me out. instead they asked us to collect some info on our family's health history to make a pedigree, like a family tree but about cancer. Mom said our family history will help her decide if she should get a genetic test for a breast cancer gene.

Nikki Post #2: Talking to our parents about our family history was very helpful in understanding why our mother is going through this horrible disease. The pedigrees has made us feel nervous about our chances of developing cancer ourselves. Steve thinks he is safe but I'm not sure. Anyway, all this talk about family has dug a family secret. My parents were separated! It makes me so sad to hear they weren't always so happy like we are today. They said my mom is a chimera and that Steve and I are also an example of a very interesting reproductive phenomena. Can someone explain to us what makes Steve and I so special?
