What an honor to have the opportunity to hear from a national teacher of the year! I thought Tabatha was a true inspiration and had a lot of gifted and amazing ideas to make teachers special and how important assessment is. Tabatha states that assessment gives you the needed background from many different standpoints to give students the best way to succeed. How she describes certain assessment tools to be so quick and easy that they give us educators the right state of mind of where to go forward for each student individually. I have always loved how Tabatha talks about diversity and cultural upbringing on who she is and others around her because that understanding from many perspectives will help all educators.

“Assessment is a procedure of making differences.” I love that quote and love that this is something Spencer and many other educators focus on when assessing their students. Spencer really dives into how important it is to understand that assessment needs to be true, free, and the science of it because the students can and will go as far as they want to based upon the assessments you use. The true art of teaching is not to teach but to create a valid and valued relationship and assessments at the beginning will help establish that.

The love for exit notes is real with Natasha! I love how creative she got with the exit notes instead of constantly just having a basic question upon what they learned. One thing I definitely learned from Natasha is to not let the crazy overwhelm and take over when it comes to making decisions for your students. The expectation bar needs to be set within the beginning and with everything going forward, the class will go. It is not about a tight ship, but an orderly ship.

A KSU alumni! I love her focus on what assessment she usually uses for her students. Especially for elementary students, the focus is growth and we want to see where they are, what they need, and where they are going. The mindset of creating an environment of “show me” what you got! I love that so much! Christina talks about not walking alone which I found truly amazing. She mentions how with every situation, please have your team and work together and keep looking to improve yourself to only help those around you and your students.

This was truly great to hear from Brandi because I think it's important to look at assessment from a new lens, especially from teachers who assess special education students. I do love her assessment for ELA with having the student read so she can see how they react to many different tasks such as comprehension, reading, vocab, etc. It gives a realistic starting point. Brandi gives an insight on how data can actually benefit you for success. I truly appreciated Brandi’s truthful advice about keeping those who will help you closer. Those people are truly here to help you and you want to keep them close.

Kelly talks about how we as educators need to have SMART goals, how we need to look at those goals and use assessments to see if we are hitting our goals and what needs to be done in order to achieve, over achieve, or get back on track. I am starting to become a fan of rubrics because they help match the expectations on the lessons and objections required. We want to always keep the end in mind! Kelly does make so much sense that rubrics give the expectations and give us educators a chance to really work smarter and not harder. But if you want to have the students in the right mindset and take risks, you need to have an established relationship.

After hearing the passion with how Dena speaks, I am starting to think about the small groupings of students and how this can lead to great success. She talks about the differences you can see with students from a big group to a small group. The trust you built is so important to establish, but within a small group you can get the understanding of what the students specifically need and now you can see the body language and different ques that will help you.

I love how Andy talks about assessment not as an end all, be all but as a simple piece of the big pie for the student, you can have the best outcome. The biggest thing I loved about Andy’s conversation was his advice of “respect your impact.” That really hit me hardcore because I can see that being a teacher can be rough and seem difficult in many ways. But given the chance we have to do what we do as educators, we need to respect ourselves in order to give the universe and the students what is needed to be great. I love that quote and advice.
