Formative Assessments are used by teachers to check students understanding throughout a unit of study during daily lessons. The main goal of implementing formative assessments is to guide learning and the learning process. If students are grasping the material then they will perform well on their formative assessments. However, formative assessments also alert teachers if a students are struggling with the instructional material and need differentiated instruction. Teachers are able to gather the results from formative assessments to monitor student progress and plan or alter the approach of future instruction. Teachers often choose to create formative assessments on technology since it can easily gather data.

Here are. few examples of what a formative assessment may entail:

Teachers and students can use the technological application, Nearpod, during a daily lesson. This is an example of a formative assessment because Nearpod allows teachers to embed questions for students to answer throughout a lesson. Teachers can make sure that students are understanding the lesson by viewing if they are answering their questions accurately.

Another example of a formative assessment is using Kahoot. Kahoot gives students questions that quiz them on learned material with a certain amount of time to answer. Teachers can use Kahoot to stop in the middle of the lesson or at the end of the lesson to check for understanding.

There are many other technological tools that can be used as formative assessments such as Socrative, Seesaw, IReady, and more.

Some examples of formative assessments that aren't technology may include exit slips where students write what they learned after a lesson or a stop and jot where students write an answer to a question asked by the teacher during the middle of a lesson.

Source URL: https://www.edutopia.org/blog/tech-friendly-formative-assessment-tools-monica-burns

Unlike formative assessments, summative assessments focus on students performance and demonstrates how effectively the teacher taught a unit of study or over the course of the year through high stakes testing. Summative assessments are graded and are weighted more heavily than other assignments that occur during the semester or year. The assessment should measure the skills and knowledge a student has gained over the entire instructional period. Summative assessments may include unit tests, a mid term exam, a final exam, performances, portfolios, long term projects that allows students to display mastery of a course.
Source URL: https://www.edutopia.org/article/summative-assessment-distance-learning

Summative Assessments Examples
As mentioned above, summative assessments can be used traditionally as a mid term test or final exam. However, teachers can implement summative assessments that are relative to performance tasks and require students to create a product that demonstrates what they have learned. Technological applications can be great tools for students to complete a summative assessment that is a performance task. Summative assessments that are performance task based may entail:

Students creating a powerpoint to display their learning of the course at the end of the semester. Students will be assigned the powerpoint and present their powerpoint to the class.

Students using online tools like Canva or Padlet to create a digital poster or infographic of all the topics learned throughout the course.

Students creating short videos that demonstrates their knowledge on topics learned throughout the course and other elements that suggest mastery of skills such as a performance or diagrams the student created.

Students coming up with a research question and find research to answer their question. The student can present their research project on a poster board or on a technology application to make a presentation.

Source URL: https://teaching.uic.edu/resources/teaching-guides/assessment-grading-practices/summative-assessments/

Performance tasks are learning activities or assessments that require the student to demonstrate what they've learning by creating a tangible product that provides evidence that they have learned new material. Instead of tests where students provide answers to questions, students will create a project or presentation to apply their learning and skills. This may include, creating presentations, infographics, brochures, videos, or research projects. Above, there were several performance tasks discussed that could be used as a summative assessment. However, performance tasks can also be used for formative assessments and may include:

Drawing a visual representation of what was learned after a lesson (a timeline, illustration, drawing).

Responding to a writing prompt that involves the topic being learned

A think, pair, share activity where students reflect on the lesson and share with their partner and then share what they learned to the class

Posting three things learned from the lesson on a collaborative classroom webpage such as ClassDojo, Google Classroom, Padlet.

Source URL: https://www.edutopia.org/article/7-smart-fast-ways-do-formative-assessment
