The Philippines were not happy that the US was trying to take over them and claiming it was because they were trying to help them, they knew it was because they wanted to benefit from their land and resources. President McKinley was in office during that time and at first he did not want the Philippines, once he saw that they ¨came as a gift from the gods¨he took them in as his responsibility and did what he thought would be the best for them. At the beginning, he couldn't figure out what to do with them and found it overwhelming to take care of so many people but then came to the realization that he had to do something to help them because all the other options were not going to benefit the Philippines.

The reasons he gave were based on idealism, for example he said that the U.S. needed to take control to help them form a government and to spread democracy to the Philippines. McKinley gave examples of Idealism but realism was also involved in the choice to take over the Philippines because the U.S. was gaining more land and also would make money from having a trading port in Asia.
