Because I try to always dress well and act presentable, people think that I have a lot of money. However, that is NOT the case. I actually grew up struggling. There were times when our power would be shut off or our water would be shut off. I have nice things, but that is because of my grandmother and uncle. They have always believed in me and helped me with what I need. One morning, my friend and I stopped to get gas. We noticed a large number of Hispanics outside of the store. While we were not looking, a few of them circled our car and was trying to look in and made comments. I was extremely uncomfortable because I was not familiar with the Hispanic culture enough to know what they meant by that. It scared me because I never did it. I struggled with stereotyping the students before I even knew them. Just because they were at a Title school, I assumed the worst.
