Students worked in pairs to create mBlock program for mBot, with ultrasonic sensor. The task was to create a simple robotic solution that could help someone with a disability. The idea is to show how ultrasonic sensor can help someone with a visual disability, for egzample if we use ultrasonic sensor on wheelchair or on the cane to help blind peoples while moving. The mBot moves to the obstacle, stops and plays a short beep.

The Help Buddy

This program originated from discussions with my students to create an accessible communication tool for children with mobility and hearing impairments. It enables them to express emotions like "HAPPY" or "SAD" using Button A/B on the micro:bit, which sends visual signals and Bluetooth messages. An external trigger can activate an SOS signal for emergencies. Students designed mounts for wheelchairs and other setups, naming the tool "The Help Buddy."

The students embarked on a deeply meaningful and inspiring educational journey designed to foster empathy and understanding towards individuals with disabilities. The activity began with an engaging YouTube video, vividly illustrating the daily hurdles faced by people with visual impairments. The powerful visuals and emotional storytelling sparked heartfelt discussions among the students, allowing them to connect with the struggles and triumphs of visually impaired individuals on a personal level.

Motivated and eager to make a difference, the students then turned to the

PICTOBLOX application to unleash their creativity. They collaboratively designed an

interactive and thought-provoking game where players take on the role of a blind

pedestrian navigating a busy street. The challenge? To listen carefully to the sound

cues of the traffic lights to safely cross.

The game wasn't just an exercise in programming; it became a vehicle for compassion and problem-solving. Students worked tirelessly, meticulously adding immersive sound effects, realistic traffic scenarios, and moments of tension to highlight the significance of accessible urban environments. When the game was finally tested, the room filled with gasps, cheers, and even tears as everyone realized the powerful

message they had created.

This activity wasn't just about raising awareness; it was about planting seeds of

empathy, creativity, and action in the hearts of young minds. The students walked away with more than technical skills—they gained a profound appreciation for

inclusion and the human spirit’s resilience.

Lighted doorbell design for deaf people

My students thought about a design that could help disabled individuals. After evaluating all the ideas, they designed a lighted doorbell for hearing impaired (deaf) individuals using the Twin Science Set (a set consisting of mechanical parts, legos, and electrical circuits). The name of our design is "Lighted doorbell for deaf people". The working principle of our design is as follows: My students created a doorbell with electrical circuits. They added a light to the circuit along with the button and bell. In this way, when the doorbell rings, the hearing impaired individual will notice that the door is ringing because they see the light even if they can't hear the sound and will be able to open the door for their guests.

The students of the E1 class were introduced to artificial intelligence and assistive technologies using the BBC Micro:bit and the Micro:bit CreateAI platform. The goal was to develop a system where subtle wrist movements could control a light switch, showcasing the potential of AI to help individuals with motion difficulties such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, or strokes that impair arm and hand function.

The Robotic Cane

The eTwinners of SustAInable created a robotic cane for the visually impaired persons. They used their BBC micro:bits and the ultrasonic sensor to detect obstacles at a distance of 20cm. If there is an obstacle, a sound alarm is triggered and a red light comes on.

My students had thought about making some fun activities for disabled people. In our school we have a class named "Aula UECO" where the students receive special attention, one day we interviewed them to know what they need to entertain themselves. Every student gave us an idea of what type of entertainment they need. So, we have been working on a lot of projects such as car games, website for very funny jokes etc. We have really enjoyed working on these projects and we would be more than happy to make more for them!
