The Rhine River system is located in western Europe. The source of the river is at the Swiss Alps in Switzerland, starting off as a small stream. It then flows north, running through the countries of Austria, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, France and Germany. The mouth of the Rhine river is positioned in the northern part of the Netherlands, where the North Sea is. It has a length of about 1232km (766mi), making it into Western Europe’s second longest river. Many other rivers and canals feed into the River Rhine, serving as tributaries, such as the Ruhr, which allow the river system to be used for significant purposes by many different countries. The Rhine River is important, for it plays a crucial role in the economic, social and cultural matters of its surrounding countries.

The Rhine River is significant for it provides a home for many people . In prehistoric times, German tribes settled on the lower part of the river system, while the Celts settled towards the Upper Rhine. The first Roman settlement along the Rhine River was in 50AD. Today there are approximately over 50 million people living in the cities, towns and communities that surround the river and these places depend heavily on the river for freshwater resources, such as drinking water. The Rhine River provides drinking water for over 20 million people. Many civilisations are positioned on the banks, tributaries or on the basin of the Rhine River, such as Basel in Switzerland, Strasbourg in France and the 2000-year old city of Cologne in western Germany. The countries situated along the Rhine River depend on the river for economic matters. The river system supports and provides for many industries, such as tourism, agriculture, trade and shipping. Each year, over 1.8 billion tonnes of boats and ships travel on the Rhine for trade, transport and shipping. The cities that the River Rhine flow through have an average GDP per capita (the total value of goods and services produced, divided by the amount of people) of US $23 877. Hence, the Rhine River is significant for economic purposes.

An environmental issue that the Rhine River has and continues to face, is pollution. Pollution first began in the Rhine River in the 1800s due to fertilizer runoff from agriculture, waste from factories being discharged into the river and a factory fire which occurred in 1986. These events caused a sudden drop in fish population, such as the salmon fish.  However, many associations have been formed in order to get the Rhine back to how it used to be. Various agreements and methods have been made by its surrounding countries, such as France, who agreed to reduce their release of chloride (a chemical) into the river by 60% and also Germany, who have constructed fish ladders, to assist migrating fish to be able to get over a dam.
