Introduction Question by Jen Adkison

What district do you teach in? What is the poverty level within the district? Do you get a budget for your class to spend every year? If yes, what do you buy with that money?

Our school had 33% low income for the 2015-2016 school year. I don't know the number for last year, but I would assume it is about the same or higher. The PTO always includes me when they give each teacher a $125 check. I usually spend it on classroom books, classroom supplies (glue sticks, tissues, dry erase markers etc.) (my students don't usually come with regular supplies), organizational supplies. After that, I usually end up spending my own money.
Cecilia

My school has an population of 80% low income. The district has a 57% low income.
We do not get a classroom budget, but sometimes receive $100 or less near the end of the year to buy supplemental materials (for the following year). This budget is to include shipping. Ninety dollars does not go very far when attempting to buy materials for students with special needs. We are not allowed to buy items such as glue sticks, markers etc. They want us to buy items that can be reused.

My district has a poverty rate of 58%. Last year my school gave me a class spending budget of $150 plus $25 as a new teacher startup. I spent it on various items such as glue sticks, folders, binders a microwave for cooking curriculum, books, science curriculum activities, and storage items. If we need anything big I can make a request to our PTO.
Tiffany

My district is over 60% poverty or so I was told during the school year. The school report card says just under 40%. I just know that parents do not always provide enough supplies for the child to use throughout the year. Many students run out by Christmas and do not bring more. I do not get a classroom budget. I used my own money to buy EVERYTHING as a new teacher this past year. The previous teacher left me some copied worksheets from the 1970s and a few posters.

Hilari
