Car repair companies are losing business as consumers are learning how to repair things themselves.

Los Angeles, CA // 19 October 2020

As people across the United States find themselves with more time on their hands and fewer reasons to leave the house, DIY or “Do It Yourself” projects are becoming popular among consumers. Instead of taking their cars to repair shops and garages, vehicle owners are checking the internet for tutorials and trying to tackle the problem on their own. This is learning of a downward trend in the profits of companies everywhere. People are trying to save money not only at the auto shop but also with their cars in general by using different lighting options that aren’t traditionally sold at garages, like 12 volt LED light bulbs.

The downward trend in car service started abruptly when people found fewer reasons to leave the house. There was an immediate increase in vehicle usage at the beginning of the pandemic as people traveled to stock up on food, pick up family members to quarantine with, or travel out of state to avoid the hot spots, but as soon as that spike was over things went downhill. While car repair services are still required, it has become a low-priority issue with most consumers.

Owners of garages and repair shops that have reopened and have started to see a steady stream of business have had to make changes to the way they run their businesses. Most areas mandate masks for everyone, even if they spend the majority of their day working in the heat of a garage. Masks, therefore, have to be high quality and breathable. In a way this has benefitted employees as they breathe in fewer chemicals from the cars they service.

Low-contact service has also been a major change in the industry. While key drop boxes and online invoices were somewhat novel and rarely used before 2020, they are now key parts of a repair shop’s business model. The employees who drive the cars must now wear gloves and companies push the use of seat protectors to protect both the customers and the employees.

Even with all these changes, the financial downturn has been disastrous for some companies, especially smaller businesses in rural areas. While large dealerships that can promote their safety measures have seen a comeback, people in areas where they do not see the advertisements or have access to the dealerships, former customers have turned to the internet and their family friends to fix cars on their own.

This has created some interesting results, though. The DIY fixes quickly turned into DIY projects, which has allowed car owners to customize their vehicles quite a bit. This is a positive sign for the economy, as the parts for home car repair and DIY projects need to be bought somewhere. This usually means that the parts are bought online and shipped to local stores or the customer’s home. The car repair industry will have to come up with creative solutions to this problem soon, however, as the effects of the pandemic on the lifestyle of the public seem to be hanging around.

Source: 12vmonster Lighting
