Dear Shakespeare,If only thou couldst see the world today. We speak through glowing screens and fly across the skies. The stage is now digital, but the drama remains the same.We still love, hate, hope, and fall—just as thy characters did. Power still corrupts, fools still speak truth, and the heart remains unchanged.Your words live on, guiding us through a world that moves faster, but feels just as deeply.

Your sonnets have crossed centuries, but they still speak to the heart. For example: In Sonnet 18, you immortalize beauty, implying that as long as people can breathe or eyes can see, it will live on and give you life.

Sonnet 116 offers a profound definition of love: unchanging, steadfast, and eternal.

Then in Sonnet 130 you put aside exaggerated comparisons and present love in its true form. You give it a deeper meaning by accepting the flaws.

•Your words continue to warm hearts and truly inspire us.And we are happy to read and understand these.

    ~Rest in peace~

As for your poems, I like some of them very much, but I also criticize some of them. You really have a different understanding of love, sometimes it is difficult to understand. However, yours are among the best poems written for that period, you are a very good poet. Believe me, you are not forgotten.

To be honest, at first, I didn't understand the meaning of your creations or the message you wanted to pass on to your readers, but I'm glad I gave it a chance and tried my best to find and understand it. My favorite sonnet is, surprisingly, the 130th, the one I didn’t like before I even read it. Your creations will definitely continue to leave a mark in many other people's hearts, and maybe there will be some curious people out there who will go through the same dilemma as I did and actually find the beauty in your sonnets.

Ioana

Dear Mr. Shakespeare,

As a high school student studying your works, I wanted to thank you for the beauty and depth of your poetry, especially Sonnets 116 and 18. Your words have helped me better understand love, not just the romantic kind, but love as a powerful and enduring force.

In Sonnet 116, you said, "Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds,” and those lines really stayed with me. In a world that constantly changes, it’s comforting to think that true love remains constant, like “an ever-fixed mark.” It gave me a new perspective on loyalty and commitment.

Sonnet 18's famous line, “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?” made me realize how poetry can immortalize someone. Your idea that beauty and love can live on through words is inspiring. It makes me want to write more, to find my voice in the way you found yours.

Though we are separated by centuries, your sonnets speak across time. Thank you for sharing your insight into human emotion. Your words still matter and still move hearts like mine, giving us the idea of pureness and infinity.

Sincerely,

Federico

IIS Medi, Italy

Hello Sir,

I write these words across the vast distance of time, with the deepest reverence and admiration. Though centuries separate us, your voice still echoes strong and true — in theatres, in classrooms, in quiet moments of reflection. Your quill captured the very soul of mankind, and with each line, you breathed life into words that shall never fade.

Your works, rich in wit, wisdom, and wonder, have given us more than stories; they have given us a mirror in which to see ourselves. From the ambitious reach of Macbeth to the aching tenderness of Juliet, from the fool’s clever truths to the king’s tragic fall, you taught us that all the world truly is a stage — and we, its ever-changing players.

What gift you gave the world: to show that love and loss, joy and sorrow, glory and ruin are not distant fates of kings and heroes, but familiar steps in every human heart. For that, dear bard, we thank you. You are not just the poet of a nation, but the voice of all humanity.

With deepest respect and gratitude,

One of countless admirers, Briana Iulia

Even though centuries have passed since you walked this earth, your words still live on—echoing through time, whispering truths about love, sorrow, joy, and the human soul.

I write to you today to express my deep admiration. Your sonnets, in particular, have touched me in a way few works ever have. Their rhythm, emotion, and timeless themes reveal a brilliance that is both human and divine. You did not merely write with ink—you wrote with heart, with spirit.

Your contribution to the English language is immeasurable. You shaped it, expanded it, and gave it a poetic soul. Through your plays and poetry, you gifted the world not only new words and phrases, but also new ways of thinking and feeling.

Though your life ended long ago, I believe your death was not an end but a continuation of your greatness—a noble passing into the realm of immortality through literature. You may no longer breathe, but your words still do, and they carry your legacy with honor.

With all my respect and affection,
A grateful admirer of your art

It feels a little strange writing to someone who lived so long ago, and yet, in so many ways, it feels like you’re still here. Your words echo through our lives—in school halls, on stages, in quiet moments when we’re trying to make sense of our own hearts. It’s almost as if you’ve been walking beside us all along.

We imagine you hunched over a candle-lit desk, ink-stained fingers, scribbling out scenes late into the night. Did you know then that your stories would live on for centuries? Did you ever feel uncertain or tired, like your words might not be enough? Because we do. And somehow, reading your work reminds us that those feelings are part of being human.

You didn’t just write plays; you captured how it feels to be alive. You understood longing, betrayal, joy, grief—all the messy things that make us who we are. When Juliet speaks, or Hamlet wonders, or Lear breaks down, we see parts of ourselves. And it’s comforting to know that even 400 years ago, people were wrestling with the same emotions we are today.

We want to thank you—not just for your brilliance, but for your honesty. For reminding us that it’s okay to ask questions, to make mistakes, to feel too much. Your characters are not perfect, and neither are we. But maybe that’s the point.

Sonnet 18: “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?”

Summary:

The poet begins by comparing his beloved to a summer’s day, but soon declares that the beloved is more lovely and more temperate. While summer is fleeting, with rough winds and fading beauty, the beloved’s beauty does not fade. Through this poem, their beauty will live on forever.

Sonnet 116: “Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments”

Summary:

The poet states that true love is unchanging and unwavering, no matter what obstacles may come. It does not alter with time or circumstance. Love is like a guiding star to lost ships—constant and ever-reliable. Even though time may physically age lovers, true love remains unshaken. If the poet is wrong, then no one has ever truly loved.

Comparative Reflection:

Both sonnets portray love as timeless and enduring.

Sonnet 18 focuses on immortalizing a beloved through poetry, while Sonnet 116 discusses the unchanging nature of true love itself.

In both, Shakespeare elevates love to a higher plane—beyond the physical, into the eternal—affirming the power of art and emotion over the forces of nature and time.

Would you like a simplified version of these analyses, or perhaps to turn them into a presentation or essay?

For changing my perspective with these sonnets Thank you Shakespeare for changing my perspective with these sonnets.

Nurcan ZGAL
