         <description><![CDATA[<div>I like the idea of devoting one full day's writing workshop to an "on-demand" assessment for each writing genre.&nbsp; This hands-off assessment allows the teacher to see what the students are capable of.<br><br>Volume of writing is important!&nbsp; Allow students to compose 10-15 entries and then hone in on one to make significant revisions to.<br><br>Teach students to write fast and furiously.&nbsp; Also teach students to write about the small moments in their lives or to relive episodes from their lives.<br><br>3rd graders should be writing approximately 1 page a day in school!</div>]]></description>

I had not considered that before. 1st graders come with a wide range of skills, strengths, and struggles. The article suggests that we do an "on -demand piece of writing" before each unit to use as formative assessment to plan mini lessons.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Miller: This was written in 2011. Isn&#39;t there anything more up to date &amp; progressive in thinking outside the box? Writing is becoming obsolete, everyone types. If you&#39;re going to stick with it then keep things like the artistry of cursive and calligraphic writing. Discuss the history of the written language vs the prehistoric forms of communication to keep things interesting. a lot was done and said long before this &quot;new thinking.&quot;  Be really progressive, think outside the box and brilliant minds of BSES develop your own &quot;best practices&quot; on innovations and introductions to writing. </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>"We inspect what we respect" <br>Good assessments are our mission statements that show what standards we value and our knowledge of the content.   <br><br>I like the idea of making assessments as non intrusive as possible, especially benchmarks.<br><br>WTW - check :)<br><br>Embed grammar into editing projects they care about, not isolated<br><br>Having students write in the context of "don't mess up grammar"  causes anxiety and reduces them taking risks on growing their writing.<br><br>Stamina building reminiscent of Daily 5 <br><br>The Think Aloud statements at the end are very helpful in outlining the mood, mode, and purpose of writers' workshop instruction.  <br><br><br><br></div>]]></description>
