Social determinants of health for refugees/migrants compared to everyone else in Australia.

1. Early childhood development: If they are refugees at a young age trauma acts as a factor in this case and can have a long-term impact on children affecting their mental development. This can include PTSD and flashbacks.

2. Education: Different countries have different types of teaching methods when it comes to educating people of all ages. Language also acts as a barrier when moving to Australia for refugees and migrants as English is a first language at schools. One thing Australia does however is utilise interpreters when possible.

3. Food insecurity: When refugees and migrants leave their homes there is that problem of moving to a place that does not possess the same food and this happens all the time in Australia. Australia may have an international food isle, but it is not an isle for every country and even then some markets that claim to have diverse cultural food do not possess the traditional or even original food items.

As not only a student but a daughter and friend as well I learned from both my teachers, peers and parents that to earn someone's respect, I need to reciprocate that towards my peers. Within my own family we share our beliefs and religions as it varies with each member, some are Christian or Catholic and pray for everyone to stay safe and healthy for all days to come while some are atheist still wishing the same thing. As a result of respecting each other's religions and character, we allow everyone to feel accepted causing people to express that towards others allowing for a healthier lifestyle for all.

When having no choice but to leave the country one loves due to fear of persecution, leads to some serious trauma for people of all ages. Mental health is one of many health concerns that should be focused on.

When speaking with a refugee or asylum seeker it is never okay to ask specifically what happened to them. It is evident that there is psychological trauma involved depending on the individual's behaviour or mood such as if they seem extremely worried or stressed.

Building a good rapport with the individual is a good start to allow them to understand that they have support, someone to talk to or seek help from.

A solution to helping refugees and other migrants is to build rapport show support by showing sympathy and / or empathy.

When speaking to an interpreter it is important to use hand gestures, body and facial expressions. In addition to this, clinicians use specific speech and first-person pronouns with a non-English speaking person, this establishes rapport.

In relation to building rapport it is also a good idea to use direct speech which means do not make the interpreter relay the questions you ask, simply talk to the patient. Maintain eye contact (if culturally appropriate) and congruent body language when a message is being translated to you.
