What does it afford students?

A think aloud is when the teacher is adding a verbal component to a lesson in which they are vocalizing their thoughts about a text to model for students critical thinking and effective thinking strategies for deeper thinking and questioning. It is a problem-solving process that affords students the tools to be able to solve problems independently when faced with unknown circumstances, usually when reading texts. They are able to internalize the teacher’s models and use that as a way to think deeply about their own text using context clues and Good Reader techniques.

How do reading comprehension strategies support think alouds?

Comprehension strategies allow readers/students to make meaning of text.

1. A think aloud is a problem solving process in which readers verbally think and stop to periodically reflect on what they have read. For a teacher it is important to model purposeful comprehension strategies during this think aloud because it provides explanations and scaffolding. Through this modeling, the students develop higher level thinking and comprehension skills which allows them to score higher on comprehension tests.
2. Through the use of comprehension strategies students are able to make meaning of the text they are reading. Comprehension strategies that they use include predictions, visualizations, inferences, activating prior knowledge, and making connections.

A think aloud occurs when a teach models appropriate questioning of the text to assist students in comprehending the text. Think alouds can focus on questions, predictions, making connections between self/text/world, restatement, re-reading or several other methods. The think aloud strategy helps students understand practices they can use to help decipher the text. When students are able to decipher text they become competent sense makers who can examine their lives, the news, and events around them to construct their own understanding.

1. A think aloud is a method of teaching that exists to aid reading comprehension. Think alouds focus on specific parts of the text or interpretations of the text such as questions, predictions, and visualizations of events or characters. Think Alouds aid students by supporting the entire picture of text interpretations beyond just reading for answers. Think Alouds provide a more well-rounded reading experience. These strategies help students make sense of the text and its place in the world.
