Raskolnikov believed that some people, including himself, were capable of surpassing ordinary moral and legal norms and committing "crimes" in the name of higher purposes.<br><br>He thought that killing Alyona Ivanovna, who was a cruel and greedy old woman, could be justified as an act of a superman who frees himself from conventional constraints.
