Most of African colonialism has to with racism. Racism is when someone judges another based on their race alone. In Children of Blood and Bone, we see that diviners are being judged on their hair alone. In the last paragraph it talks about the women’s war and the rise of women. This could be related to how zelie (a girl) is a strong fighter even though women don’t usually fight.

The last article in the three we read talked about the Igbo women, and how Britain tried to impose a tax on them. This reminded me of Children of Blood and Bone because, in this book, there is a tax that is imposed on Divîners. And, like the Igbo women, eventually the Divîners rose up against their oppressors. However, unlike the Igbo women, the tax was put in place, whereas the Igbo women were able to “convince” Britain not to put the tax in.

In Children of Blood and Bone it is shown in chapter three from Amari’s perspective how lighter skin is idealized when Amari’s mother refers to Samara as “regal” but in reality means she’s looking lighter. On the first page of the readings it talks about how Europeans viewed Africans as less than because of their darker skin. As how Africans were treated poorly by Europeans the divîners are treated poorly by the kosidán because of their white hair and darker skin tone.

The plot of Children of Blood and Bone is influenced by the history of colonialism. Moreover, colonialism is when someone takes over land that does not belong to them. In addition, they force the people out of their land with physical force. For instance, due to racism, African Americans were removed from their land and forced to move elsewhere. This relates to Children of Blood and Bone because people like Zélie, also known as diviners, are treated differently. Furthermore, the regular people judge and look down on the diviners just because they have white hair. All in all, the idea of colonialism and the discrimination that occurs in Children of Blood and Bone have similarities.

Ethan Wang

The colonial systems of the nineteenth century and the Women’s war can be related to the racial injustice in the Children of Blood and Bone. In the 1900’s, European countries were engaged in efforts of colonizing Africa and over rule them. In COBAB Mama Agba was wrongly taxed due to her hospitality over “maggots” The same happened in real life in the 1900’s when Africans had to pay taxes to Europeans on their own land.

The plot of Children of Blood and Bone could be influenced by the history of colonialism because as seen in many chapters, the diviners are put to work in a system known as the slums. In our history we see that the African American people were heavily enslaved by other countries but far before that, it was there own that would enslave them. In colonialism, people are judged based off their skin just as the maji are judged by their hair. We see that there is correlation between how slaves and the Maji/diviners in children of blood and bone were treated. Based off what we know, we can infer that there could be some possible influence for Adeyemi to include the slums and the way the maji are treated from how the colonialism worked. Moreover, the idea of colonialism and the treatment towards maji are very similar there still are other aspects of the book that didn’t mean it was all from colonialism.

We see this in the Children of Blood and Bone when the diviners are being treated differently because of their hair and background. Also, colonialism is when someone is someone is taking over someone’s land. We see this in the Children of Blood and Bone when the Orïshan’s raided the Maji and ended the magic while also taking their land.

Diviners are oppressed much like the native peoples in early African colonies by the Spanish and Portuguese. The Warrant Chief of Nigeria also tried to tax women. Much like the diviners in Children of Blood and Bone. In later colonies of Africa slavery was abolished in the empires, but they native peoples were still discriminated against.

One way the Children of Blood and Bone could be influenced by the history of colonialism is where the text says, “…how devastating that was to the once thriving empires of the region. The threat of violence and raids tore families apart. Many tried to defend themselves or seek refuge…and the continent experienced and extreme population loss.” This was shown in the Children of Blood and Bone because Zélie’s family and past was torn apart by threats of violence from rulers. Her mother was killed during a raid where other adult magi were killed. This also resulted in a large population loss. The text also discussed slavery in Africa before the transatlantic trade system, which can be related to the magi forced to work in the stocks in the Children of Blood and Bone.

Before Europeans, slaves were able to be freed from slavery, own other slaves, ect. When Europeans created the slave trade, slavery became racialized. In children of blood and bone one of the main themes is colorism, and how in this world people with lighter skin are closer to the top of the hierarchy, while people with darker skin are at the bottom. Due to of the racializing slavery, instead of slave seeing anyone who worked for someone else, slaves had dark skin and were African American.

Izzy k

The plot of Children of Blood and Bone is influenced by the history of colonialism in many ways. Colonialism has influenced the plot because as we have seen various chapters where people are working and not receiving anything in return. In our readings we learned a lot about slaves, their origins, how they were treated, and many more things that are still embedded in our history. Another aspect that reflects colonialism is racism. In America mostly blacks were affected by this but others were targeted to. So taking this all in colonialism has most likely influenced the plot of the Children of Blood and Bone because we have seen in various chapters where people (the kosidán) are afraid and don’t like people that obtain magic powers who are the maji. We have also seen that in this magical world a regular person cannot be married or have a relationship with a maji. This has also occurred in America where at one point in time interracial marriage was not allowed. So, all in all, the plot of Children of Blood and Bone is influenced by the history of colonialism in many ways that we have seen throughout the book.

In Children of Blood and Bone, we are informed that the Maji are in a sense are traded to go to the Stocks. As we know, the Stocks is a horrible place where the Maji go and work, but ultimately end up dead. In the reading we were assigned, it talks about slave trade where it says merchants and slave traders would capture Africans and force them on ships to be sold when they arrived to their destination. The text says, “ They would transport their captives to the coastal ports and force them on ships to travel on what is now called the Middle Passage.” This is how the reading connected to the plot of Children of Blood and Bone.

The government or the king is taking over and controlling the divners and their magic. The king took control of magic destroyed because he thought divners were dangerous and needed to be controlled. Then he discriminated and tortured the diveners because they came from magic. This also happens in really life for example, in real life many countries like Britain and France who invaded West Africa established colonies and tried to take over the land.

-Tori Davis

This is similar to how the French tried to “civilize” the Africans so that they would “evolve properly.” Although King Saran tries to end magic, Zelie is driven by a desire to reclaim her heritage and fight against the oppressive system; this is similar to how those that were enslaved attempted to keep their traditions and culture alive amidst their harsh treatment. Furthermore, in southeastern Nigeria, the Igbo people were forced to pay a burdensome tax which mirrors the Diviner tax in Children of Blood and Bone. Finally, the mental strain that colonialism had on the enslaved people mirrors the thoughts and worries of those with magic.

The plot of the Children of Blood and bone could be influenced by the colonialism of Nigeria in 1914. In 1914, Lord Lugard, a British colonial governor, created a system of indirect rule. He did this by appointing “warrant chiefs” to rule over local tribes, in comparison to how they were originally elected by each tribe individually. In 1925, the British and warrant chiefs instituted a tax on Nigerian men. Additionally, they also planned to issue a tax on market women, in combination with their already minuscule lack of rights. After a rumor of this supposed tax on woman spread, 3 local female leaders decided to lead a protest that eventually caused for the tax to be scrapped and the warrant chiefs to resign

This is similar to the plot of the Children of Blood and Bone in two key ways. First off, the 3 female leaders who led the revolt are similar to the group of Inan, Zelie, and Amari.

Secondly, the plot is similar through the tax on a specific group of people. The lack of rights and taxes on women is similar to the taxes and lack of rights for the diviners in the Children of Blood and Bone. They also both caused for a revolt to take place.

The plot of Children of Blood and Bone is influenced by Colonialism, because it shows a similar story to how Slave Trade started. Slaves had always been around, but Slavery became more about race. This was seen in America, where the Transatlantic Slave Trade became very popular. You can compare this to the beginning of the Children of Blood Bone, where they had magi and non-magi live together. If you did something wrong, you’d get punishment, you can assume. But after the raid, which was also a thing in West Africa. In these raids, they would capture several Africans, so they could sell the, into slavery. Although we don’t see this directly in the story, we do see people of the diviner race, be targeted for taxes, causing them to go to the stocks. The stocks represent slavery, because of how terribly they are treated, and how they are not paid. Diviners are forced into the stocks if they can’t afford the taxes, this can be seen in West African history, as the raids. Colonists would be the soldiers, because they know what’s happening in the world, and help anyways. However, many people from America, after slavery had become normal, didn’t know that it was wrong, they had been born into a world where it wasn’t looked down upon. These people can be the people of Orisha, who didn’t do anything, because they believed it was ok. However, this doesn’t mean they would good for looking the other way, only that they were told it was ok. The Africans, before being taken are the diviners, and after are the diviners in the stocks. Both the stocks, and slavery are treated terribly, and forced to do labor for no pay. After the raid, many people of Orisha, started to look down upon diviners, even calling them a slur. This can also be seen in the Africans taken, to America, used as Slaves. Many of the United States, didn’t believe that Slaves were people. Some people of this book didn’t believe that the diviners deserved to be living, hence the similarities between the story and West African history, and American colonist history.

The children of blood and bones plot is heavily influenced by colonialism by how lighter and darker people are treated in the book. When we’re first introduced to Amari, it’s the first time we are shown just how deep the colorism runs in their world. Even though Amari is a royal, and is assumed is treated like the rest of her peers, her mom is constantly degrading her on how much darker she is then a different royal, and trying to persuade her to use products. This branches on to colonialism because colonialism is based on racism and colorism. Colonialism is lighter people taking over and putting down places and people that they consider less than them. That’s exactly what happened in the book, because lighter people that aren’t Majis constantly make fun of Maji for their skin color.

In the novel Children of Blood & Bone, we learn that the world of Orïsha isn’t a paradise. It’s a world of racism and pain for the once-peaceful maji tribes that inhabit its lands. In the book itself we see several examples of colonialism, especially from Zelie’s point of view. Being a dîviner, she resembles a maji and is treated like scum because of it. She’s discriminated by guards and constantly has to face the threat of being put in the stocks. This closely resembles how African-Americans were treated in the 1600-1800s, with their fear of being enslaved and discriminated against.

The plot of Children of Blood and Bone is heavily influenced by the course of events that happened when Europe colonized Africa. Europeans invaded African lands and destroyed many civilizations, cultures, and the economy of Africa. This can correlate to the monarchy invading Maji lands, taking magic away from them, then destroying their race. With the colonization of Africa, once Europe had some control over Africa, they started to take control of their people. European colonies would kidnap and enslave many native Africans with the help of fellow African tribes. This can correspond to the stocks in the Children of Blood and Bone. This is were most diviners end up, working the rest of their lives for the people that enslaved them.

For example, in the early 1900s the black power movement poverty was a big thing for colored people. In the book we see the Guards hurting the maji and looking down on them. This resembles the non-colored people looking down on the colored people. Also the gaurds would charge them so much money they couldn’t get out of debt that was kinda the same thing during the black power movement. This is because the company’s would give them minimal pay and they would not care for them, not keep it clean, and it would be a hazard to everyone that worked or lived there.

They had very few rights and were called “maggots.” They were also put into the stocks and sent to various locations to do difficult manual labor that others did not want to do. This related to slavery during colonial times because Africans were oppressed. Europeans traded them and forced them to work for no money. They treated them like they weren’t even people just like how nobles treated diviners on the book. This relationship helps to further enhance the central allegory of Children of Blood and Bone.

- Miranda Williams

Saran suppresses magic because he views it as “dangerous”, similar to the leaders of the European colonies who believed that they needed to cleanse the African populations.

Also, racism and colorism are a big part of Children of Blood and Bone, as well as throughput the history of not just Africa, but the entirety of society. In the book, it mentions how those of a darker skin tone are viewed as inferior and dirtier than those with a lighter complexion, which can be seen when the Kosidan are discriminating the Divîners.

Lastly, slavery is a huge aspect of Children of Blood and Bone’s plot and Africa’s history.

colonialism is the discrimination or overpowering of someone based on certain qualities or aspects about them. The Children of Blood and Bone is a story of a group of people who are dofferent than the rest being treated lesser than by others in their community. In the story the group of people work to stop this hatred and even gain some form of revenge on them for it. In this description we can see many hints, and forms of allegories towards aspects in history that allign with the act of colonialism. For example civil rights, which was an act that took place in the 1900s. People of color fought for equality due to history of being discriminated against. In conclusion, all of these pieces of history and summarizations being linked can conclude that the plot of Children and Blood and Bone is influenced by history of colonialism.

This can relate to the book Children blood and bone because like Zelie the main character known as a diviner that they are treated differently from others. This is because in the children of blood and bone the Nobility are consistently discriminating against the Majis and making them work for the Nobles in harsh conditions. This is similar to colonial times when white settlers would take people of different colors and use them as slaves. Zelie may relate to the Igbo women who protested against unfair taxation and against their chief. Zelie may relate to them because throughout her life she has had to pay higher taxes just because she is a Maji and considered “different.”

The events of Children of Blood and Born seem to be loosely inspired by Colonialism and its history and the Woman’s War of 1926. In 1914, Lord Lugard, the colonial governor, instituted a system of indirect rule that utilized “warrant chiefs” that would rule over the people and report to the British authorities. This is similar to the kingdom of Orïsha and the king and knights that rule it. These “warrant chiefs” or the king then create a problem for the inhabitants. Which ultimately leads to the “warrant chiefs” becoming more and more oppressive over the people. The kingdom then established tax which forced the men to raise money to pay for the system which the Igbo people or diviners were forced to live with. This tax became extremely burdensome and applied additional financial strain onto the people. Following this, the “warrant chiefs” then planned on placing another tax on Igbo market women. These people similar to the maji and diviners suffered oppression and unfair treatment. This leads to three local leaders who hear about the tax, like Zelíe, Tzain and Amari, to rally Diviners/Igbo women to protest against the tax and Warrant Chief. Both the Children of Blood and Bone and the Woman’s War of 1926 follow colonization which leads to unjust treatment of a group of its people from their leaders. This leads to a group of fed up Local Leaders or the group of Zelie, Tzain and Amari, setting out to make a change to this conditions placed on them.
