There is a very loose program for hiring - most of the time the single criterion is speaking another language.

Often, having functional skills as an aide trumps language ability. Good crowd management / English / self motivation are more effective than language skills

Many teachers are tempted to defer teaching of ESL learners to aide - that is not their role.

Effective teacher / aide relationship requires communication, clear and defined classroom roles and duties, and expectations. Teacher and aide should be clear on their duties and the duties of the other.

The book creates a wholly unrealistic scenario of how and aide should be trained and how a relationship should be built. The book assumes that time will be allocated for the teacher and the aide to develop a clear and concise understanding of the aides job and role. The book suggests the teacher create a contract for the aide to assign, despite the teacher having no authority to supervise the aide.

The book assumes that the aide and teacher will have time outside of student contact to discuss debrief, when the reality is contrary.

One good suggestion is creating a job description of duties that the teacher would like performed in the classroom setting, and what the expectation is during the beginning of the class, during work time, and during wrap up.
