Power-Hungry

Flaws in his actions/beliefs:

He doesn’t actually have any power and ends up making ridiculous and comical commands.

How does the Prince react to him?:

The Prince tries to remain respectful but recognises that the king has no actual power.

“If your majesty wishes to be obeyed promptly, he might give me a reasonable command’ (39)

What about society does he represent?:

The king represents adults’ obsession with power and having authority, even when it is empty.

Regretful and Ashamed.

Flaws in his actions:

He is hopeless because he is trapped in a vicious cycle of being ashamed of drinking, but still drinking which gives him more shame

How does the Prince react to him:

He felt sorry at first however, later he felt confused and found grown ups very odd.

What about society does he represent:

Adults confuse themselves and will keep doing things they are ashamed of.

He is egoistic as he only wants people to cheer for him, praise him and seeks for their admiration.

Flaws in his actions/beliefs:

He’s trapped in the belief that he is most superior and that all men are his admirers, despite being the only one on the planet.

How does the Prince react to him?:

The prince felt confused why the conceited man felt that he should be admired for being the best on his planet, but still played along with his delusion.

What about society does he represent?:

The conceited man represents how society keeps craving for the external praise of others, so much to a point they would delude themselves into thinking they are the best and show off.

Responsible, devoted, dedicated, faithful

Flaws in his actions/beliefs:

He does his job tirelessly without asking himself if its necessary. He is also too obedient and never consider if there is a better way.

How does the Prince reacts to him:(49-51)

He thinks that the lamplighter’s work is meaningless. But, he felt that the lamplighter was the only one who does not seem ridiculous because he is preoccupied with something other than himself. He also gave the lamplighter suggestions to rest like taking three strides around the planet to rest.

What about society does the lamplighter represent:

He represents those that are forced to do labour. He also represent society that obeys every order, do things blindly without being told why they are doing it in the first place, and never considered a better way

The drinker was ashamed of himself and miserable. He was ashamed as he wanted to forget that he is ashamed of drinking, his contradictory feelings made him feel miserable and caused him to be stuck in a endless vicious cycle.

Flaws in his actions/beliefs:

He is contradicting himself as he is ashamed of drinking, yet he drinks to forget, he should stop drinking to stop this issue. This creates a cycle of drinking he can’t break free from, instead of facing his problems he hides from them by drinking to escape reality to try to relief his pain.

How does the prince react to him:

The prince felt sorry for the drinker at first, but after hearing why the drinker was drinking, he started to feel perplexed by his odd reasoning.

What about society does he represent?:

He represents the people who push away their troubles thinking they will solve themselves, when in reality they wont and they are just running from the inevitable. They also represent people that waste their lives on meaningless habit that will not benefit them or the people around them. They are people who do not change their ways to help themselves and instead feel sorry for themselves and never improve themselves.

Unlearned. He hasn’t had any explorers to come to him yet! doesn’t know anything about his own planet

He is believing in self importance, proud. He talks down to the little prince, and he thinks he’s really good ‘the geographer is far too important to go sauntering about’ (pg 53)

Stubborn. He doesn’t want to explore his planet even though he has no explorers

Patient and detailed. He asks for proof, and answers the prince’s questions

Flaws in his actions/beliefs:

Even though he has no explorers, he still does not go exploring his own planet due to his own pride. His work as a geographer is useless. “But there he sits and receives the explorers.” (pg 53)

He thinks he’s too important for flowers even considering the context (small planet with very little things, talking to a child attached to the flower). “We do not take note of flowers.” (pg 54)

How does the Prince react to him?:

He was curious about why the geography though his flower was unimportant, then saddened to hear from him that his flower was ethereal. He was also disappointed that the geographer was so unlearned.

What about society does he represent?:

The geographer represents people who believe themselves more important than the issue they speak about and do nothing about it. He also represents the people who care only about the facts and not about the experience gained.

In Jing Wen’s words, “all bark no bite”.

Duty-bound: He follows orders without question, though he admits that he is exhausted, but he is loyal and evokes empathy, sympathetic. He is also very persistent about lighting the lamp for others and never takes a break.

Flaws in his actions/beliefs:

He is tirelessly lighting and extinguishing the lamp every minute and is strictly following the orders, refusing to take breaks.

How does the Prince react to him:

The little prince respects the lamplighter’s dedication and finds his work meaningful, even though it is exhausting. The little prince is very impressed by how faithful the lamplighter is to his job. “As he watched, the little prince felt drawn to this lamplighter who was so faithful to order… he is the only one I could have made my friend,” Page 50,51

What about society does he represent:

The lamplighter represents people who perform seemingly meaningless task with dedication and strong sense of responsibility

The conceited man is self-centred, self-absorbed, craves praise and admiration, always asking for compliments

Flaws in his actions / beliefs:

He ignores others’ opinions unless they flatter him, needs constant praise, believes that everyone admires him

How does the Prince react to him:

Feels puzzled and bored, sees no point talking to someone who only wants to hear praise

“Growns-ups are decidedly very odd,” (pg 42)

What about society does he represent:

Vanity, people who are obsessed with seeking attention and the need of external validation

Greedy and overly proud, obsessive , stubborn

Flaws in his actions/beliefs:

He relies on his own thoughts and fantasies that he is rich than actually taking the step to be successful.

The prince’s reaction to him:

Disappointed and unimpressed, does not know why he acts and thinks this way.

What about society does he represent:

The businessman represents the people obsessed with materialism and wealth but does not try to do anything to make it come true.

• Very reliant on other people

• Lacks practical knowledge

• It takes a longer time to create records of the places around him as well as making others go through an extra step to bring proof

How does the Prince react to him? :

• The Prince got confused by the Geographer, not understanding why his flower was not recorded

• Quote from the Little Prince’s speech : ‘We do not take note of flowers,’ said the geographer. ‘Whyever not! They‘re prettier than everything else!’ (54)

What about society does he represent? :

• Officials that rely on second hand knowledge

• The people who want the truth and need evidence to confirm their beliefs

Character traits/ behaviour:

stubborn, obsessive, and busy

Flaws in his actions/beliefs:

He is obsessed with counting the stars, he insists that he owns them, despite what the little prince says.

How does the Prince react to him?:

The little prince was puzzled and questions the businessman about why and how he owns the stars. “It is of use to my volcanoes, and it is of use to my flower, that I own them. But you are of no use to the stars.” pg 47

What about society does he represent?:

The businessman represents people who are obsessed with wealth and overlook the meaning of life.
