This passage shows how the kids Clarice's age are being extremely violent and even killing one another. This is because the people living are not allowed to think, and are left in darkness and ignorance. The kids don't know how to feel certain emotions because they have never thought, and resort to aggression when dealing with these emotions, sometimes extremely. Clarice knows this, and asks Montag the essential question, if he is happy. She tries to find a rationale for why he is a fireman, and she initially suspects unhappiness because she sees it all around her every day.

In this dystopia, conformity is idolized. It is clear that this causes the loss of emotion as people are no longer able to connect to one another or even recognize their own feelings.
