The white community, the adults particularly, preferred Mainstream pop because of the artists mainly being white and its songs having a more conservative, country feel. The audience of R+R was diverse. In the beginning of R+R, the audience used to be mainly African American, since at the time R+R was like R+B. The white community made up myths and rumors about all black artists, the main artists of R+B and R+R at the time, about how they are perverts looking for young white girls and how their lyrics are inappropriate and full of profanity. White America did not accept R+R, they did not even accept all of Elvis Presley because of his "black" characteristics he brought with his music like his provocative dancing. When Elvis was televised, he was televised from the waist and up, cutting out his legendary leg movements. R+R artists just wanted to make music, they did not in anyway purposely try to kill Mainstream Pop. The same thing can not be said from the other side. Of course, with the country characteristics of pop at the time, it had a shuffle, rhythmic feel in the background that made the music be something to dance a little bit too. Although, the music never made people go absolute crazy in their seats, it was like a groovy classical piece. R+R on the other hand, brought out the animal in people when they listened to it. Absolutely anything can happen when a R+R artist performs, they can just on the piano or have a dance break or jump into the audience.
