I chose this passage because it is the first part that really shows how badly the nazis wanted the Jews dead, making them face punishments in many ways, and even setting them up for other punishments by holding them back. This passage stood out in the way that it states that officer Schmitt smiled about the situation, and how he knew that the Jews could be killed, giving insight on how the Jews were being treated horribly.

I chose this part because it eventually leads to the part where Michael is born, and that is where the main story begins, as Michael is the author and the first person point of view. This part stands out because it showed how even with the terror and sadness the family faced, the thought of having a new child made Papa’s face light up and bring joy to him and Mamishu.

I chose this part because it shows how they would pass dead bodies and other objects that they don’t recognize, only to later learn how terrible they were. This stuck out to me because I think that it is crazy that they didn’t recognize what they were passing, and how they didn’t think it was suspicious that there were so many of these chimneys around, and didn’t try to investigate or figure out what was going on.

I chose this part because it explains how they kept track of everyone, which was by putting numbers on their arms as a tattoo, and then documenting who’s number went to who. It also states that it included a “date of death” which didn’t really make sense to me unless they planned a certain day to kill each and every member of the camp. This stuck out to me because it explains how they were given number instead of names, and it also contains a statement saying how the SS was “proud of it’s efficient camps and it’s murderous system”, which makes the tone for this scenario very dark.

I chose this part because it portrays a strong message on how persevering towards a goal can almost always be worth it. In this scene, Mamishu was just about to give up and not go any longer, but she begins to think about her son Michael. This gives her the strength and courage to get back to him and keep going, and she eventually gets up and makes it back to him. This stuck out to me because of how if this part had gone any differently, it could’ve altered the entire story, and because she chose to fight for them and not give up they successfully escaped Auschwutz later in the book.

I chose this part because it is one of the very few parts that brings light throughout the dark in the entire story. In this part, the survivors of Auschwitz have a celebration, as they have final,y been liberated and no longer have to suffer like they did. Unfortunately, more hardships would come, but that doesn’t seem to faze the newly free prisoners of war, as they use everything they can get their hands on for celebrating and having a good time. This stuck out to me because it sets a joyous tone for a small section in the book, and it gives off a mood that they don’t care for what will happen right now, as today is for celebrating their freedom.

I chose this part because it is where they first return to their home before the Holocaust. However, someone else now occupied the home, and did not give them a very warm welcome when they tried to walk in, spitting racial slurs at them and forcing them out. This created a dark, gloomy mood but also left the reader wondering what they would do without a house. This stuck out to me because it explains how everything has changed since the war, and how almost everyone is against them after they get out of the Holocaust.
