Quotes of Reflections/Mirrors

"And she saw that, owning to the peculiar effect of this convex mirror, the scarlet letter was represented in exaggeration and gigantic proportions, so as to be greatly the most prominent feature of her appearance."( ch 7, page 98)
-This quote shows how others view her after her punishment of wearing the scarlet letter. To other people, they see Hester as an adult-er due to the A on her chest and she will be seen as that forever, but to her it doesn't define who she is.

Pearl was standing by the brook as Hester was looking at her and saw that Pearl's image reflected in the water. (ch 19, page 198)
-Hester realizes that the forest she is standing in with Pearl is the society and the brook is the thing that divides and connects the society. When she sees Pearls reflection in the brook, she sees that Pearl is the thing that connects yet divides her from Dimmesdale.

"He kept vigils, likewise, night after night, sometimes in utter darkness; sometimes with a glimmering lamp; and sometimes viewing his own face in a looking glass, by the most powerful light which he could throw upon it." (Hawthorne, 130)
-Dimmesdale is realizing who he is. He realizes his sins and lies in his life. Since his refusal to confess to adultery, the guilt is eating him alive and his physical strength is diminishing.

In another example, Hester sees herself as a child. When Hester is on a scaffold, she sees herself "glowing with girlish beauty" in a dusty mirror (Hawthorne, 51). This shows that she is thinking about her childhood and how she was free of sin. In the mirror, she sees herself as a beautiful, young, innocent child. She wishes she could go back to this easier time.

Summary of Article

The article spoke mainly about reflective imagery and how it intertwines with the scarlet letter. Characters will often look in mirrors to notice something about themselves they hadn't noticed before. The reflections have to do usually with food and eating and take place during dinners. Over time, Hester saw herself changing while looking at her reflection. Reflections and mirrors show the growth of each character over time.

Symbol Reasoning

Throughout The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne uses reflections and mirrors as an important symbol in the story. The characters' reflections and mirrors show who they truly are and how others view them. When someone in the story looks at themselves through a mirror or reflection, they see who they really are, whether it might be good or bad. Because of this, it then shows how everyone else views the character as well. The usage of the symbol gives greater meaning to the novel because it delves into the minds of the characters.
