A major engineering undertaking of the Victorian era was the London sewage system, which was designed by Joseph Bazalgette in 1858. He proposed building a 132 km sewerage network associated with 1600 km of road drains. Many problems had to be faced but the sewers were completed. After that, Bazalgette designed the Lungotamigi (Thames Embankment) which housed sewers, water pipes and the London Underground.

When we talk about the Victory Age (also called Victorian Age) we generally mean that period of English history that goes from 1837 to 1901. During this era to govern England is Queen Victoria, much loved and appreciated by all the people, and it is from her that this period takes its name.

In addition to increasing the professionalism of university sciences, many Victorian gentlemen devoted their time to the study of natural history. This discipline was greatly reinforced by Charles Darwin and his theory of evolution, published for the first time in his essay The Origin of Species in 1859.
