I feel most confident in my symbols painting. I don’t paint a lot so it took a lot of patience and experimenting to get colors I wanted and liked. I think this piece has the most meaning to my beliefs and aligns with my thinking. I first had to research symbols that stood out to me which was the Penrose triangle which to me represents the illusions in reality, a raven which are animals I find very interesting, a hexagon which is my favorite shape and symbolizes innovation and advancement, and the circum pointum which represents consciousness. I experimented with the surrounding colors, the deep maroon and the gray which I made by combining the primary colors red and blue and a bit of yellow and secondary and tertiary colors to make the type of gray I used. I layered on the deep maroon first and then added the layer of gray on the perimeter and made defined brushstrokes in order to try and make my symbols gathered in the center pop out more. Now reflecting, I would want to experiment more and see how white outlining could affect the appearance.

The project I feel most confident about is the abstract collage project. In this project, I used a variety of different shapes to represent "juice" in an abstract way. I think I especially enjoyed this project because it allowed me to experiment without boundaries with different colors, shapes, and lines. For the concept, I expressed juice by representing droplets of juice going inside the human body. I used a variety of different shades of color by mixing different amounts of primary colors, which I found to be the most enjoyable part of this project. I also varied the sizes of the shapes and tried to create symmetry in my work, which brought the whole work together. I also put a lot of thought into how I layered my shapes, putting the shapes into the back, middle, and foreground. I think this project was challenging in that I didn't have a lot of experience with acrylic paint, but I really enjoyed testing out different colors and using different sized brushes. In the future, I want to layer more colors on top of colors to add more dimension.

I feel most confident about my charcoal drawing. I wasn't familiar to the material, which was a challenge at first, but I think that was what made the drawing more interesting. I did well differentiating the tones and shades of my drawing. Printing texts on my drawing was especially enjoyable, though a lot of the charcoal powder went off. The texts gave more meaning and strength to my drawing, and I really enjoyed and felt confident working on the piece. The generally dark tone of my drawing also made it stand out, and caught the viewer's attention more easily. It took me the longest to complete this project, and I think that is part of why I feel the most accomplishment.

I feel most confident about the Still Life Project. I spent a lot of time on it and I’m really proud of how it turned out. I think I definitely challenged myself by picking two translucent objects and a container with small details to draw. I had a lot of trouble with drawing the diamond and I’m not completely satisfied with how it turned out, but I still tried my best on it. I think I showed depth in my drawing but I still need to work on contrast because all the objects still are pretty similar shades of gray. I definitely improved on making a background, middle ground and foreground in my piece. If I could change it, I would work on contrast to make each object stand out more and also making the proportions better.

I feel most confident about my Contour line & Lyrics Project. I expressed my adoration for home by drawing myself looking at a sunrise through the window in the front of my house. I wrote the lyrics "I know the sun will be rising back home" from Don't Forget Where you Belong by One Direction, which perfectly describes the security home provides and the importance my house, family, friends, and town have to me. I experimented with grayscale and tried to create a balance between the darker and lighter tones. I also added geometric and font variation by using rectangles, triangles, semicircles, and various sizes and styles of fonts in the piece. To add to this project, I would further experiment with back, middle, and foreground, as it could add more depth to this piece.

I feel most confident about my Symbol Painting. I challenged myself to use repetition and variation in my lines and every color used was deliberately chosen based on what its connection to me was. I also workshopped my thumbnail quite a bit before I began painting the final project, which I think made my piece more visually creative. While I did reference my original symbols for their shape at the start of the project, I challenged myself to think creatively and not be limited by my worries about it looking perfect. In the future, I would work on making sure the background (which is a light pink) does not overtake the main symbols.

I feel most confident about my Still Life Project. I think the piece is strong because I did a good job drawing the darks and lights of the objects and the contrast. Personally, I liked drawing the logo on the bottle because the Chinese characters gave my drawing a nice dash. Also, black and white still life is one of my favorite forms of art, so it was a project that I enjoyed doing the most. If I could change my piece, I would make the fix the proportions that got messed up when I retook my photo. I think I would make the neck of my bottle smaller. I also think I can work on the texture of the box more.

I feel most confident about my still life project. I think this piece was good because I actually enjoyed adding all the details and shading. I spent time drawing an outline for this piece which gave it a more realistic spacing. Drawing in black and white with a pencil is my favorite way of doing art. It is simple but at the same time so many details can be added that painting cannot have. To show my shading better, I should have chosen objects that are not translucent or clear.

I feel the most confident about the Charcoal Selfie Project. I enjoyed the creative process of not only working with new mediums but combining them and finding a way to make them work cohesively. When carving the word/phrase, I tried to make the font noticeable and unique, and used bold colors that stood out and represented me. There was other prints on the back of my print, so I couldn't cut the words out, and it ended up picking up a lot of charcoal when trying to print it, which I had to go back and redraw. During the drawing process itself, it was also sometimes discouraging when your drawing didn't look right, and you could tell-- it's your own face. As I spent more time on it, I think I improved, and the final result turned out fine. I chose the words "break through" to show your own strength in what you are able to do, and the barriers you can overcome. I chose blue because I see it as an inspiring color, and wanted to keep the overall drawing monochromatic to make more of an impact. I feel like in the future I should plan out the words and their placement should be like during the drawing process, as I feel like the words could have contrasted more with the background.

It turned out better than I expected, and I really enjoyed working with charcoal which is always interesting!
Printmaking was also a new concept for me, and I had never tried it before this piece. The different mediums I was able to use in this piece really made it very fun to draw, and I can't wait to see what else I can do with the techniques I've learned.
If I were to add something, I think I would pay more attention to the proportions of the portrait as there were some parts that did not look as realistic as I wanted them to. I might have also wanted to try adding some question mark symbols here and there, but I unfortunately ran out of time. Despite everything, I still really enjoyed working on this piece and it turned out great!

I feel most confident about my Charcoal Selfie Project. In comparison to the contour line and other pencil drawings that we did, working with charcoal felt very freeing. I particularly enjoyed the fluidity of the strokes--the flowing shifts in width, strength, and shade. I learned how to control my wrist movement with more precision, since the force transferred sensitively onto the paper, making every minute alteration more visible. With this understanding of charcoal, I was able to depict my features and expression with more meaning. My selfie was actually taken during a facetime call with my friend--an environment I felt very comfortable in. I chose this picture because of the authenticity in the moment and the playfulness from close friendship, things that are the most important to me in any artwork I create. I enjoyed every piece that we did this term, but this was the motivation that made me want to perfect the charcoal piece over and over again. If I have the opportunity to add something, I want to use a cooler tone for my word, which was "fierce". The word simply feels ablaze, so a cooler color can contrast the meaning and portray ambivalence upon observation.

On my selfie project, my concept was to display the subtitles of ambition using a less defined print and a tranquil background colour. I found the craft to be my best yet on the selfie project due to the deliberate use of the printing and the watercolour in the piece. I am also proud of using a more unwieldy material in the form of charcoal. I would try to add some more printed features to the background to make it a little more busy. I also would have liked to spend some more time developing the hair shapes with the charcoal.

The project I feel most confident about is the Selfie Charcoal Project. This was my first time working with charcoal, using the grid method, and printing so I was unsure how my piece would come out. But, in the end, I was very surprised with how well it came out. I think I did a good job using different tones and shades throughout the piece and I really like how my eyes turned out. In the future, I think I would have added the word strong on my eyes instead of my mouth to symbolize how I view the word strong in my own eyes. Also, I would have made my background have a more vibrant pink or included purple watercolor to really emphasize the distinction between stereotypical boy and girl colors. I really wanted to emphasize how when I was younger I only associated the word strong with males and how this has shifted overtime so I think making the watercolor stand out would have made my piece much stronger.

I feel most confident about my still life project. The placement of each object was pretty well spaced and I utilized the contrast of values to bring out each object. I had some unique shapes in my drawing and that was challenging to figure out how to draw. The bottom of the mirror challenged me especially. I first got down all of the details and then had to go back in with a bigger picture in mind to make it look more like a whole object rather than random shades. I had so much fun doing the shapes of the animals on the succulent flower pot. I think it really catches the eye and brings something unique to an otherwise simple still life. This took quite a while to do and I had to use both big strokes and detailed lines to create this piece. I really think this project really allowed me to focus on the details and I really enjoyed the shading portion and making everything come to life. In the beginning of the year I wasn't doing so well and I definitely think that translated into my art work. But now, I think I'm doing way better and this allowed me to express myself.
One thing I wish I did differently based on looking at everyone else's drawings is making everything darker and emphasizing the background.

The project I felt most confident about was the abstract collage project. I felt like I had the opportunity to take an object (or pet, in my case) and re-arrange the patterns and colors while communicating the main characteristics of the original subject. It was also really interesting to limit myself to the colors and harsh contrasts of the construction paper. Creating textures with such a flat material turned out to be a challenge I really enjoyed, and I think it came out well! As a concept, I really think I chose well by using my bird, as she has a lot of distinctive markings and a very vibrant personality. It was fun to try to capture as much of her as I could in this project, and I think I had the most motivation for this project.

The project I feel most confident about was the still life, partially because it was the most within my comfort zone. I tried to display what a typical lunch would look like for me during quarantine (iced tea, a commons box, and a face mask) but next time I think I might try to show something that has more personal meaning. I also feel like I could've added more contrast to my piece to make the piece appear more moody and isolated/separate, to display how myself and a lot of others have felt during quarantine. I think the still life was a good opportunity to practice and improve upon the skills we learned in class, like shading, tones, gestural drawings and outlines, but I also think I have further to go!

The project that I had the most confidence in was my still life. Firstly, I was more comfortable with the medium since I have used it many times in the past. Additionally, I had the most amount of time out of all the projects to complete this one. I show a microphone, a soda can, and a computer mouse in this drawing. The one problem I had is that I didn't really have access to softer pencils. However, I really like how it came out, and this really feels like it symbolizes some of my daily life.

I think my favorite part was the word "Empathy" I put on top of my mouth because I thought it came out really clear and was put down exactly where I wanted it. I really enjoyed adding the shading because I thought it made my selfie look a lot more like me and more realistic. I also liked doing the water color background and I thought a did a good job with that. I feel most accomplished with this piece because it took the most work and I am proud of what I did. I thought the word stood out well which is what I wanted and why I felt the best about this project. I also felt that I asked a lot of questions about this project during class and practiced a lot in order to do my best. I also received feedback in order to make it even better.

The project that I felt most confident about was my abstract collage. While at first it was just a 2d collage, I later started using 3d elements to give it that extra pop. Speaking of pop, I like the mix of colors that I used, because the contrast between black & white and blue & yellow makes the collage really pop. One thing that I might do is make the black strips a bit thinner so that I can keep the collage open and uncluttered. This would also give me the opportunity to add some more background elements to make the collage more interesting.

I feel most confident about my contour line and lyrics project. I think the way I used different tones and arranged the text was really nice, and conveyed the overall theme of my artwork well. It was hard at first to be able to get the forms down right, and arrange the text so it was all symmetrical, but after practicing for a while, I got the hang of it. I really like the fact that I was able to give my artwork a lot of personal touches, and express myself through the piece. If I could change anything about it, I would clean up the smudging and add color to my drawing, and play around with different shades to convey further meaning. I think this project really helped me develop my art skills, and I definitely learned a lot about tonal variation and how to create depth using background, middle ground, and foreground. I was also able to experiment a lot, and learned how different font styles, sizes, and shapes can convey different things.

In this piece, I took a rose and created an abstract version of it using contrast colors and different shapes. I loved the non-representational process in creating this piece and I feel like I made the most of the assignment in accord with my object. I was really happy with the almost childlike expression I drew and the way the contour lines helped to exaggerate the emotion displayed in my face. Also, I liked how the text "curious" circles around my pupils, as it makes it fit naturally with the rest of image, but also allows it to stand out to the audience. If I were to go back and change anything about the drawing, I would like to deepen some of the tones I used. I think this would create more contrast throughout the piece and thus, make aspects of it jump off the page.

The reflection I made while thinking what body part to specifically draw felt very personal and it really felt like I was drawing for myself more than anything. The use of exaggeration and symbolism and also words to represent the meaning behind the drawing made it really special and I especially like the attention to details it gave us the chance to explore. The background really stood out and when drawing it, I felt really happy with how it turned out and definitely was proud of it overall. I think maybe next time I would choose a more specific word or maybe make the drawing itself more clear so the audience can understand it better or sympathize with it in a better way.

I had initially linocut the word "unhinged" with a little starburst background that was supposed to curve around my face. I ended up missing my mark when I finally printed, though. In the end, I printed the word multiple times across the right side of my piece, in different shades of red and orange. The words are nearly incomprehensible, but considering its meaning, it felt strangely appropriate. I think if I were able to change anything (because I don't think I would add anything, its already a bit on the busy side), I would have printed my word multiple times again. I would have liked to take up more space on the page instead of relegating the small space I did with such visual noise. I also would have drawn my initial grid signs for my face a bit lighter and made my original picture with higher contrast.

The project that I am most confident in is the Charcoal Selfie project. I had to start my drawing over a few times in the process of drawing my face because the proportions of my face were off. Every time I tried to redo it, the process began to seem "easier" and I felt like I was able to produce better work through trial and error. One thing I learned is that it is easy to get frustrated when doing art, but it's about patience. Also I am not much of an artist so I surprised myself with the final product.

I feel most confident about my charcoal drawing. Although this was my first time using charcoal and printing, I thought my project came out well! I think I did a really nice job on my nose and printing the letters “caring” across my mouth. I decided to use red and light blue, as red represents my heart and light blue represents healing and understanding. I think the hardest part of this project for me, was shading in the different tones on my face as they were very apparent in my original image. Because of the charcoal and the multiple steps, this project took the longest to complete. However, I am proud of how it came out in the end, so it was all worth it!

The project that I feel the most confident about is the Still life project. I think this project was the most challenging/ took the most amount of time for me, but I really like how it came out. At first I struggled with depth, and finding lighter/darker tones so it was really helpful to check in on that. I ended up re-doing my first version, and drawing a completely new picture to submit for the final. By the end, I felt much more confident in this piece, and was able to use shading to demonstrate the arrangement of my objects, background, middleground and foreground, and also some shadows. Overall I'm proud of the progress I made over the course of this project, and I'm really happy with the final product.

The project that I feel most confident in is the charcoal selfie project. This was my first time using the grid method in a while, so I was a bit nervous that it wouldn't go my way, but I found it to be a lot less challenging than I though it would be. I also liked that we were able to use color in this project since my personal pieces typically include color. The colors used in the piece are mostly primary colors and I did this because I have always liked using just primary colors especially after learning about Piet Mondrian. I also thought that it would be more striking to have a strong blue against a warm colored background, considering that those colors are supposed to clash. This assignment took me a very long time, from choosing poses to sketching out the poses I thought about trying and just making sure that things were proportional. I think my biggest challenge while making this was that my first grid was not a square grid, all the boxes were rectangles digitally, but on paper they were all squares. This challenge tripped me up for a couple of hours, but I was able to fix it in the end. I think the charcoal selfie was the most enjoyable project this term and I liked the way that mine turned out!

I am most confident about my still life drawing! I liked this project because it was very fun for me but I also found it kind of challenging because it took a lot of time and I needed to make sure I was looking at everything from a consistent angle. At first I had 3 different objects that I was going to draw but then I switched them out for these three because they have more detail to them and they are generally just nicer objects.
