Manuela Pinto Vieira d'Ávila, was born on August 18, 1981, in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul - Porto Alegre -, is a Brazilian journalist and politician. Affiliated to the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB), she became the youngest councilor in Porto Alegre between 2004 and 2006, was a federal deputy for Rio Grande do Sul between 2007 and 2015, state deputy from 2015 to 2019, pre-candidate for president of the republic in 2018, candidate for vice president of the republic in the 2018 election and ran for mayor of Porto Alegre in 2008, 2012 and 2020.
During the period in which she held political positions, the journalist created numerous proposals that would benefit Brazilian education. Manuela, is recognized for her communist struggle, participation in the defense of the feminist movement, support for the LGBTQIA+ community and the agendas of black men and women.

Why is she an idol to me?

I met Manuela in 2018, while competed for the vice-president of the Republic alongside Fernando Haddad (PT), unfortunately I saw the plate be defeated for that of Jair Bolsonaro (without a party) and Hamilton Mourão (PRTB). I didn’t really dig into her story, because I wasn’t a person who liked politics. Later, in 2020 during the quarantine, I went deeper into the political world and began to finally identify with some leaders, one of those people was Manuela d'Ávila, who between November and December ran for mayor of Porto Alegre, being defeated by Sebastião Melo (MDB) in the second round, but she made me reflect and have a thread of hope for the future, mainly because she is together with the youth that will be the mass in Brazil in years, for bringing feminist agendas, which I admire a lot, for defending minority groups - blacks, LGBTQIA+ community, umbanda etc -, and mainly to fight for a reformulation in the Brazilian educational system, which motivated me to dream of becoming a Minister of Education in the future - who knows, right ? -. She inspires me, makes me believe and helps me to continue believing as long as there are people like her in politics.

Revolução Laura.

The first book she wrote - out of four released in total - is called the Revolução Laura (name in Brazilian Portuguese). The book was launched in the first half of 2019 and tells the story of a mother of a 2-year-old child, who traveled throughout Brazil between 2017 and 2018 running for political office, emphasizing the whole journey with her daughter, Laura, at her side.

The journalist's second book was published in October 2019 and is called Porque Lutamos? Um livro sobre amor e liberdade(name in Brazilian Portuguese).
The book brings a reading about the importance of feminism and how it has already helped in women's conquests, as it still fights for greater gender equality. It also brings a reflection on machismo and privileges, and motivates readers to further explore the female market.

The first and penultimate book published by Manuela d'Ávila arrived in the world in August 2020 and is called E Se Fosse Você?, (name in Brazilian Portuguese).
The book tells how Manuela suffered during the presidential campaign with hatred and fake news on social networks and brings the reader a reflection, what if it were you? Within that scenario, what would you do? How would you react? This book also has a preface by Felipe Neto.

Sempre Foi Sobre Nós.

The last book published - until now - by Manuela, is just over 1 month old, started pre-sale on February 17 and from March 1, started its "normal" sale.
The collection entitled Sempre Foi Sobre Nós, was written by countless women, among the authors are Dilma Rousseff, Benedita da Silva, Manuela d'Ávila, Maria do Rosário and Sonia Guajajara. It included 15 women's texts on violent experiences lived in the world of politics. Manuela takes the opportunity to highlight and lament the violence suffered while competed for mayor of Porto Alegre in 2020, mainly from her ex-fiance Rodrigo Maroni (PROS), who also ran for office, made personal attacks, instead of debating the questions made by Manuela .

Manuela formed a family consisting of a husband, a daughter and a half-son. Her husband is called Eduardo Tavares Leindecker and is known as Duca Leindecker, he is famous for playing and being the leader of the band Cidadão Quem. Her daughter's name is Laura D'Ávila Leindicker, she was born in August 2015 and her half-son is Guilherme Liberato Leindecker, son of another marriage between Duca and singer Ingra Liberato.

2018 campaign

As many of you may know, Manuela d'Ávila (PCdoB) compete for vice president of the Republic in 2018 alongside Fernando Haddad (PT). After the arrest and revocation of the ex-president Lula's candidacy, the ticket had changes and Manuela, who until then was a candidate for the post by the PCdoB, was recommended to give up and become a candidate for vice-president for the Haddad ticket. The two went on to the second round with the ticket of Jair Bolsonaro (without a party) and Hamilton Mourão (PRTB), but lost by 55.13% to 44.87% in the second round.

2020 campaign

In 2020, Manuela d'Ávila competed for mayor of Porto Alegre alongside her deputy, Miguel Rosseto (PT). It was the third time that the former deputy tried to win the position and become the first mayor of Porto Alegre. The poll led the majority of the polls until the end of the first round and the last poll before polling day in the second round, which was not seen at the polls. The two finished in second place in the first round, winning the place for the second round, where they were defeated by 54.63% to 45.37% for Sebastião Melo (MDB) and Ricardo Gomes (MDB). The campaign was marked by fake news against Manuela, the most famous and dirty was when on the eve of the first round, Sebastião Melo's team took a sound car that traveled all over Porto Alegre saying that if Manuela won the trade it would be closed, the the city would be closed, everyone would eat dog meat and that Porto Alegre would become Venezuela.
