Air pollution emitted from transportation contributes to smog, and to poor air quality, which has negative impacts on the health and welfare of U.S. citizens. Pollutants that contribute to poor air quality include particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Through the emissions from combustion of fossil-derived fuels, transportation systems contribute to degraded air quality, as well as a changing climate. Transportation also leads to noise pollution, water pollution, and affects ecosystems through multiple direct and indirect interactions.

Their is no doubt that humanity needs transportation to get around. Like planes and cars. But most vehicles make a lot of trash, pollution and CO2 in the Earth. So much, that in fact there are landfills of garbage that have been there for over 6,000 years and no human has wanted to clean it up. That causes plastic to melt over time and slide down into the Earth's surface.

Air pollution can cause respiratory issues, strokes, heart attacks or dieing. Air pollution is also in some way connected to all of pollution. For example water pollution. Air pollution is apart of Water pollution because it affects marine animals and may disrupt the food chain if only one species goes extinct.

Hello my name is Zoe Zak and here are some facts about me! Well, I was born on April 23rd at 2:08 am in 2013. My full name is Zoe Tatiana Zak Mendoza (the "Tatiana" name comes from my godmother Tatiana which is my mom's cousin) I am 11 years old. My parents are Sara Mendoza (if you want you can look her up in Google she is pretty famous) and Chad Zak. I was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in United States of America in Magee hospital and my favorite food is pasta and I have a hamster her name is snow. I believe that Carbon footprints are very important to our beautiful Earth because it tells us how much CO2 is in the environment because of years of research and giving surveys. Honestly, I think that reducing your Carbon footprint would be fantastic to do and also the greatest thing you can help with! Reducing, recycling and reusing is great. Not only for the Earth but also for the environment, living things like humans, etc. Lastly, I think it is humans in general that created the problem and now they need to fix it!!

My first Halloween costume was a ballerina and my first Christmas my parents dressed me like an elf. I believe that carbon footprint is all men’s fault because men is how invented the machines that produce CO2 but in my opinion I think that family’s can have a bit of responsibility for not wasting, using renewable energy or solar panels. Bye😘

Transportation: Letter for family

Made by: Iara Chacón and Zoe Zak.

Did you know that transportation can be great for humanity and horrible to the environment? Well, a study shows that transportation can negatively impact human health in two broad ways: accidents and environmental pollution. It can also facilitate the spread of infectious diseases. Transportation pollution is a problem and we can solve this by taking public transit and walking more and this will shrink our carbon footprint.

One of the problems is that any type of transportation vehicle expels CO2 which causes air pollution and damages the atmosphere. According to climatekids.NASA.gov, “Any particle that gets picked up into the air or is formed from chemical reactions in the air can be an aerosol. Many aerosols enter the atmosphere when we burn fossil fuels such as coal, petroleum, and wood. These particles can come from many sources, including car exhaust, factories and even wildfires. Some of the particles and gasses come directly from these sources, but others form through chemical reactions in the air.” Which is very bad for the environment because air/transportation pollution leads to strokes, heart problems such as heart attacks, kidney failure, respiratory issues and pneumonia.

Talking about problems, another problem is emissions. For example According to europarl.europa.eu, “Transport was responsible for about a quarter of the EU’s total CO2 emissions in 2019, of which 71.7% came from road transportation, according to a report from the European Environment Agency. The EU aims to achieve a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from transport by 2050, compared with 1990.” That is a great piece of information to tell our family because we can start walking and no more cabbing. This is important to our family because everytime we go on a family vacation we are wasting gasoline and it burns into the air creating more C02.

With all these problems comes a lot of solutions which would be to stop using gasoline, electric and hybrid vehicles.

There is no doubt that humanity needs cars/planes or different types of vehicles to travel the whole globe. But we can walk or ride bikes to our destination whenever possible. You can use bike-share programs if they are available where you live. Take public transit when possible because that may help the world little by little. And it also saves electricity! You can carpool with friends instead of driving alone. Use ride-sharing services. Try to use transportation that does not need energy, gasoline or diesel to power.

This is a serious problem because it affects humans and most importantly any living things and we don't do many things about it. When we walk more and ride bikes more we can make our family's Carbon footprint smaller and smaller. Little by little it might take awhile but we will slowly fix this huge problem until it's

nothing.

Recycling: Recycling would help because it helps in many things such as it helps pollution, also throwing garbage in oceans and in street. Because helping, Recycling can stop what effects pollution at about 320,000 people die every year from air pollution.

Saving electricity: When you save electricity You are doing a favor for yourself. Why? Saving electricity you also spend less money, your energy can keep for more time. Most of this energy comes from Fossil fuels, they have a grand part of your Carbon footprint.

Don't waste water: When you waste water unesesary you are affecting the world, like waste water or throwing trash to the water, If you see this moment Bogota(colombia) is in crisis because they don't know how to use well the water or how treatment and that that a effect that they don't have many water now.

What is a frayer model?

A frayer model is a paper or a poster that has four sections: definition, characteristics, examples and non examples.

Here is an example using a Carbon footprint:

Definition: The definition is quite simple. It's the amount of greenhouse gases (including CO2 and methane) that are generated by our actions doing normal things.

Characteristics: The major contributors to Carbon footprints are: processed food consumption, transportation and house hold energy.

Examples: Wasting water/electricity makes a larger Carbon footprint. Wasting paper is very bad because in order to get paper we must cut trees down. And lastly, everything you throw away.

Non-example: Using bicycles instead of cars, eating vegetables and fruits instead of processed foods, and meat, windmills and solar panels and finally recycling.

What are circles of action?

They are things that you can do with your family, your community and the World for example in this particular case we will use our Carbon footprint.

Your family: save water, food and electricity as much as you can because wasting too much is terrible for the Earth and environment. You can also recycle different things or give them away to charity or homeless shelters but whatever you do don't throw it away to the garbage. One other one is to keep things that seem broken like toys, clothes or shoes you can try to make it have a purpose.

Your community: Don't waste paper because paper is made from trees and it releases CO2, put correct items in garbage bins so then when they empty it, it won't go to to the wrong destination for example the green bin (the organic one) will go to ecosystems and the black bin will probably go to landfills. Don't use your own transportation so much use more public transportation. Compost and don't waste food.

World: We should stop using fossil fuels because that creates a lot of air pollution. Stop throwing trash into the ocean. That is bad because it endangers allegedly species.

You may use fluorescent light bulbs for any light other than the sun for your house or apartment.

Lastly, plant more trees or any type of plant if you can because it reduces the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and environment which makes the air much cleaner.

What are Greenhouse Gases?

Greenhouse gases (also known as GHGs) are gases in the earth's atmosphere that trap heat. During the day, the sun shines through the atmosphere, warming the earth's surface. At night the earth's surface cools, releasing heat back into the air. But some of the heat is trapped by the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Why are Greenhouse Gases important to our Earth?

Greenhouse Gases are important for Earth but, too many can be very dangerous.

Steps:

Solar radiation at most wavelengths passes through the Earth's atmosphere.

The Earth absorbs most of the radiation and causes global warming.

The Earth radiates heat energy and some of the heat escapes into space.

Some of the heat is absorbed by greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere.

CO2: ( AKA Carbon dioxide and Oxygen) it comes from decaying and living organisms. Carbon dioxide is released when you burn coal, oil, fossil fuels, gasoline, etc.

H2O: (AKA Water vapor) this is water in the form of gas. High in the atmosphere, comes back to liquid water and it rains. Water vapor blocks heat from escaping the atmosphere.

CFC'S: (AKA Chlorofluorocarbons) the gasses weren't created by nature and they damage the Ozone layer.

N2O: ( AKA Nitrous oxide) it is a natural gas of the nitrogen cycle. It's released by some factories power plant and fertilizers.

CH4: (AKA Methane) is formed by carbon and hydrogen. When released from wetlands, growing rice, raising cattle. And it traps a lot of heat.
