Este acontecimiento se origina tras las manifestaciones realizadas por las mujeres de principios del siglo XX en Europa y en Estados Unidos, buscando mejorar las condiciones laborales y el derecho de sufragio. Existen dos hechos relevantes por los que se escoge esa fecha. El primero fue una gran marcha de trabajadoras textiles en el año 1857, donde miles de mujeres marcharon en protesta por las miserables condiciones de las trabajadoras. El segundo, ocurrió en 1908 donde 40.000 costureras industriales de grandes factorías se declararon en huelga demandando el derecho de unirse a los sindicatos, mejores salarios, una jornada de trabajo menos larga, entrenamiento vocacional y el rechazo al trabajo infantil. Durante la huelga, 129 trabajadoras murieron quemadas en un incendio en una fabrica textil.
