Snack: Larabar

Larabars are a very healthy and filling snack on the go or at home. The flavor "cashew cookie" only has two ingredients..cashews and dates. Dates are used for flavor and to hold the bar together. This bar has a great amount of nutrients because of the dates being a fruit, and protein is provided by the cashews. With only two natural ingredients older adults will not have to worry about sufficient amounts of sugar or any sugar being added.

As for the item I chose in my pantry, quacker instant oatmeal, I was also surprised to see how much sugar was added.

Snack/meal drink: 2% Milk

2% milk is a beverage many people enjoy. It is the perfect beverage for breakfast in the morning or even just a snack to fill you up when you get hungry before your next meal. Not only does it taste delicious, but it is a good source of protein. Although it is a good source of protein, you have to be aware of the amount of sugar this beverage contains. It contains 12 grams of sugar per 1 cup! I actually was surprised by this. I thought there would be a lot less sugar. That is an unnecessary amount of sugar to consume, especially when there are other alternatives that can replace 2% milk in an older adult's diet, such as Unsweetened Silk Almond Milk. It contains 0 grams of sugar, and tastes just as good, if not better, than 2% milk. Another plus of unsweetened almond milk is that it contains 100 less calories than 2% milk does. Awesome, right?!
-Kennedy Sliemers

I was shocked to find that it contained 10 grams of sugar for one serving. Something that is recommended by the doctor and also has many health benefits sure has a lot of sugar. I think older adults should buy Quaker's lower sugar oatmeal instead of regular oatmeal. Quaker's lower sugar strawberries and cream oatmeal only contains half the amount of sugar (5 grams). I believe lower sugar oatmeal by Quaker's is a good alternative to regular oatmeal to reduce the amount of sugar older adults consume.
-Kristin Masada

Having to always research items, I have learned a lot about what does and does not have sugar. The one item that never occurred to me to look at the sugar was cheese! I, as well as my grandma, thought this was a healthy snack. Now although it only had 1g of sugar it does go to show how easy we can take in sugar. After this realization, if elderly individuals were more aware of what goes into food these days then they can prevent themselves from eating harmful foods. Not only does reading the packaging help to see whats in it, but to help you choose the cheese right next to it that has half the amount of sugar, just have to see how the packaging it labeled!
-Heather Honeck

Snack: Welch's fruit snack

Welch's fruit snacks are my alternative instead of eating candy, but I have never looked at the label because the front of the box advertises, "Fat free" and "Made with real fruit." How bad can these fruit snacks be, right? I eat one pouch a day to reduce my sweet cravings. Of course there are some fruits as it claims, but the list of ingredients also includes corn syrup, which is really bad for you! Corn syrup is artificial sugar. This snack is misleading to the consumers. There are 15g of sugar in one pouch that has about 10 pieces! There is more sugar than I had anticipated, that is more than half the intake of sugar for older adults. If a elderly person would like some type of sweet craving I would recommend perhaps a sugar-free popsicle. This contains low calories and also less harsh on blood sugar levels. Or even consuming fresh fruit can be a better alternative. Depending on what season it is, there are many different fruits to choose from.
-Mary Nakamura

Snack: Plain Greek Yogurt with Fresh Sliced Strawberries

In my Health Science 101 class, I learned that the daily sugar intake is 25 grams and that detail has stuck with me since. Therefore, now I am always looking at food labels to make sure that what I am eating does not contain so much sugar. I do admit that I don't manage it very well, but I make myself very aware of it and try not to eat many snacks with high sugar. The suggested snack for an older adult is to eat greek yogurt with fresh strawberries. Plain greek yogurt has low sugar and out of all the fruits there are, berries seem to have low sugar. Strawberries only have 7 grams of sugar per cup. It's also a better alternative to add fresh fruits, instead of eating the yogurts that already contain fruit. So adding fresh sliced strawberries to greek yogurt is a delicious combination without it being too plain and high in sugar!
~Veronica Regalado

So what they claim is not necessarily true. Yogurt is a quick snack for many people that are on the go or just something easy to get out of the refrigerator. This Dannon yogurt claims to be non-fat, which then automatically makes people think it's a healthy choice. I found for one cup of serving, of this non-fat yogurt, total sugars is 22g! Another alternative to still keep the yogurt snack for older adults would be to keep an eye on the sugars per serving, as there are other options with low sugars. I found a plain yogurt, which contained 13g of sugar per serving (1cup), and they can easily add a couple of diced bannanas, diced almonds or tiny bits of apple to add flavor.
-Elizabeth Cancino

Naked Juice = not so healthy for the naked body

Snack/Meal drink: Naked Juice green machine

We all know that fruits and vegetables are most associated with health and fitness. Anyone who wants to be healthy thinks that it is all about eating fruits and vegetables. This is the reason why products like Naked Juice came up to the market. Little do people know that these juices are literally just sugar and water. The amount of sugar in each bottle is insanely high that it amounts to 28 grams. This one small bottle sums up more than the recommended sugar an older adult needs in a day. Naked is one of the companies that doesn’t lie to you when it puts “no added sugar” on the label. I checked the ingredients and they in fact don’t use any added sugars. But, they don’t have to. The fruits they use are so high in sugar it probably wouldn’t be edible if they added more. Juices like naked are also missing fibers which are the most important in digestions and absorption. It also prevents in over consumption. So instead of buying this product, it is actually better to buy your own fruits and make your own smoothie. By doing this, you can control the amount of sugar and sweetness of the drink and most importantly you know yourself that it is actually healthy.

- Czarina Macapagal

Baby beets from Trader Joes are a good addition to any salad that can definitely lighten up any body, literally and figuratively. I use to gate eating salads because they were just too plain and boring. After discovering beets, my salads are never dry and are always cheerfully delicious. I would recommend adding this to an older adults diet because it is fairly low in sugar, calories and it has no fat. Salads will never be the same!!!!!!
-Rodrigo Arreola

The fact that the title of the snack emphasizes fiber is great for everyone knowing that as a whole population we lack fiber. But chocolate chip and chocolate drizzled fiber bars aren’t the best way to get fiber because it’s an unhealthy option. An older adult may be able to get their fiber but they are also increasing their blood sugar. Fiber should be found in fruits and vegetables not in a wrapper. With chopping up fruits and vegetables they not only get their fiber, they are also getting vitamins and other minerals as well as eating less processed foods.
- Bertha Rendon

We bought these Crispy Fruit snacks a few weeks ago as an alternative to chips, but I never looked at the nutrition label. However, I am relieved because it only contains 7 grams of sugar and they taste pretty good! They come in all different varieties, but my favorite is the mango. So instead of eating canned fruit that contains extremely sugary syrup or other junk food such as chips and cookies, grab some Crispy Fruit instead! My godmother, grandma, and many other older adults can definitely enjoy this alternative, especially if they love snacking during the day like my family sure does!

- Kimberly Dantes

She was always munching on something. However, she made sure her snacks were not only delicious, but also healthy. A snack she would always eat was cottage cheese with fresh fruit. Cottage cheese only has 4g. of sugar and that is even less than plain non- fat yogurt. The added fresh fruit doesn't have that much sugar either and the sugar it has is natural sugars. Not to mention, cottage cheese is also a good source of protein. With this simple snack, older adults are getting protein, calcium, and fruits all in one while limiting their sugar intake. This snack has way less sugar than a regular yogurt or granola bar.

-Alexis Chavarin

Snack: Quaker rice cakes

Snacking has gained a lot of momentum in between meals over recent years. As an example when I go over to my grandparents home there are usually a whole cabinet full of chips, cookies, crackers, etc. The inner kid in me still gets excited to open the cabinet at her house. So i asked my grandma if her and my grandpa usually eat all the snacks and she told me no its for who ever comes over to visit. Then she pointed out that she usually eats rice cakes as snack as a healthier version of chips. So i compared the nutrition labels to other snacks she had and it was true for the most part that her rice cakes are healthier than most forms of processed snacks. So i asked her if she really wants to be healthy why doesn't she get the original rice cakes with no added flavor. That is when she pulled a bag of original rice cakes and told me to try one and i ended up trying theflavored one. So using rice cakes as a alternative for other snacks like chips or cookies can benefit the health of older population. But just like any snack it must be consumed with moderation just cause 1 serving is considered healthy a person can not eat an entire bag thinking it only benefited their health.

-Brian Montano

One snack in particular that I enjoy eating and is also healthy for older adults, is banana chips from Trader Joe's. These guys pack a sweet punch, all while fitting in the strict restrictions that older adults have to abide by. According to the nutritional information, about 1/4 of a cup suggests 3g of sugar per serving. This amount is surprisingly low because if anyone has tried these snacks before, know that they are pretty sweet. This in turn can allow for banana chips to much on! Furthermore, cholesterol and sodium are nonexistent, at 0g. This cereal is common in many ages because of the slight honey flavor. Children love that it is sweet and adults love it because of the nutrition. Older adults should eat this cereal in moderation because it has 9 grams of sugar. The recommended amount is 24 grams of sugar per day so older adults should only eat the serving size, which is ¾ths of a cup.

I like to consider Bolthouse Farms strawberry Banana smoothie a daily quick energy booster/ snack for myself. I will often drink a bottle before my 7 a.m. weight lifting, substitute it for a meal before dinner, before track practice, or whenever I'm craving a smoothie, not ever once looking at the ingredients of the smoothie. This smoothie in fact contains 28 grams of sugar which is equivalent to 7 teaspoon servings of sugar. It is so easy to think these types of drinks are healthy when they have "no sugar added", "no preservatives added", "no artificial flavors", and "100% vitamin C" written across its labels because we automatically assume its "healthy". The amount of sugar in these drinks are not healthy to consume on a regular basis especially for older adults. Consuming that much sugar is not good for an older adult's weight, health, or metabolism.
To ensure that older adults are getting the proper nutrients that they need through fruits and vegetables, it is vital and important that they stick to blending the fruits themselves or consuming the natural fruit/vegetable itself rather than buying a pre-blended smoothie. Fruits contains vitamins and antioxidants essential for their bodies. With that being said, by taking the more natural route and staying away from the fruit juices and sugary smoothies, one will be able to consume other alternatives that are healthier and less toxic to the body.
-Tyler Hardge

Today juices are getting a lot of attention because consumers are considering them to be a healthier alternative to soda and carbonated drinks. This may be slightly true in some cases, but for the most part these fruit drinks usually contain the same amount of sugar per grams as carbonated drinks such as coke and sprite. When I looked into the fridge and cupboard, I found a variety of foods that claim to be healthy, but have large amounts of sugar. The label that I took a picture of is of a juice drink (grapefruit) that promotes its nutrients and that it is natural, yet it has 26 grams of sugar per serving. Some things that older adults can do to avid this daily calorie intake is to alternate with black coffee or simply water or one can add water to the juice. I also had orange juice which is considered healthy, but that drink also has 26 grams of sugar. It is better for older adults to have a variety of drinks and fruit while being cautions of the sugar within them.
-Christian Rubio

Snack / Meal drink: Vitamin D Whole Milk

The daily meal drink that I have found in my refrigerator was the Vitamin D Whole Milk. Milk is very good for a lot of the young people as it helps them grow taller and it contains dissolved carbohydrates and proteins that is good for people. However, when I looked at the nutrition facts of the milk, I was surprised by how much sugar it contained. This product contained about 12 grams of sugar per cup. That is critical for older adults as older adults should not have more than 24 grams of sugar per day. If the older adults want to drink milk, they would have much better diet with sugar free milks such as Unsweetened Almond Milk or Coconut milk. They would be consuming way less sugar but will still be able to enjoy milk.

- Seunghyun (Eric) Han

Snack:Canned fruit(Pineapple)

Fruits are healthy! we all know that. They are also delicious, how ever when they are sealed in a can, they become unhealthy simply because it is loaded with tons of sugar to preserve it. It is easy to think "at least I am healthy", but the truth is once the grams of sugars are added to preserve it, it looses its nutritional value. In this case, the canned fruit pineapple in my pantry is load with 16g of sugar and loaded with heavy syrup. With advisement, lots of unhealthy and canned items tends to be on sale, it is easy to fall into temptation and purchase unhealthy meals. An older adult's diet can be improved by eating in portion sizes, reading the labels and being aware of what is good for their body. Also, I will advice them to eat organic fruits, and avoid canned foods.
*Folukemi Akinbi

As we get older the correlation between diet and good health become more visible, therefore it is imperative to improve diet among older adults by lowering sugar intake. One way to do this is to consume Almond Breeze unsweetened almond milk. Unsweetened almond milk has 0 grams of sugar so it doesn’t raise blood sugar. Unsweetened almond milk is also fortified with nutrients such as calcium, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, and other similar nutrients found in regular milk. A regular cup of milk contains 13g of sugar- which is almost half of the recommended amount an older adult should have in their diet. Unsweetened almond milk has no added sugar, so it helps regulate the sugar intake among older adults, while still providing them with essential vitamins and nutrients.

- Alana Miranda

Like most college students, many of us are always out and about and on the go, that some of us, like myself, sometimes have a hard time finding time to eat breakfast, everyday,. So rather than usually able to enjoy my breakfast with a nice bowl of milk, I usually have the tendency to take it in a little zip-lock bag and snack on it in the morning or through my day. Sometimes, I have the want to get kid-like cereals, like these fruity dyno-bites (which are like a fruity pebbles knock off) because it makes me feel like a kid again with the every day stressful college life. So it didn't come to a surprise that a single serving size contains 11 grams of sugar and 110 calories. A few ideas to think of that could work to improve an adult's diet is look into alternative, cereals that are better for your diet that contain more fiber, to help with better digestion, and less sugar. And another tip to make your breakfast healthier is to add fruit to your cereal, like bananas or strawberries are my usual go-to's when I actually have the time to sit down and eat a nice bowl of cereal.
~Rianee Dalusag

Snack: Yoplait yogurt flavor: pina colada

Yogurt is a quick snack and an easy breakfast to take on the go. I love yogurt and tend to eat a lot of it. I thought it was actually healthy but when looking at the amount of sugar it contains; 18g and 150 calories its not really that healthy. An older adult could eat less of this type of yogurt and compare the different types of yogurts to see which one contains less sugars also older adults can try an alternative such as plain yogurt which contains less sugars. I am now going to start comparing the different types of yogurts so i can get a much lower calorie and sugar intake.
-Briana Garcia
