Growing Dependence on Cars

After the war automobiles were added to the list of items that were to be widely purchased in the United States. Car sales rose from 6.7 million to 7.9 million in the span of 5 years. The number of private cars on the roads jumped from 40 million to over 60 million in 10 years. Suburban living made cars a necessity due to the suburbs not having public transportation causing people to have to drive themselves to work , doctor, dentist, school, and stores. Cars were made an easier purchase because of the abundance of petroleum which was the raw material gas was made from and since it was so easy to access the gas prices were inexpensive and tons of gas for customers.

The Interstate Highway System

With more and more cars on the road this called for the need of more roads. "Automania" caused local and state government to build new roads so all the cars didn't have to travel one road. The new roads would link major cities to each other and also linked schools, shopping centers, workplaces to residential suburbs. The suburbs were booming in population so the new roads were much needed. In 1956 President Eisenhower signed the National Highway and Defense Highway Act of 1956. This act funded and build a nation wide highway system. The highways stretched for 41,000 miles. With the new roads that could take you anywhere encouraged people to move and live farther from the cities and developed new suburbs. Since there were brand new roads for people to travel on it made the commute to farther workplaces.

With cars on the rise and the high demand for them people in the United States built different areas to use your cars. The creation of Drive-in movie theaters, restaurants, and shopping malls. Although there were a ton of great opportunity for the United States with cars there were a good amount of negatives that came with cars to. Noise and exhaust polluted the air. Automobile accidents claimed more lives every year. Traffic jams raised peoples stress levels. Heavy usage of the roads damaged them. Because cars made it possible to live in the suburbs white high and middle class family's moved to the suburbs and left the crowded cities and not to long after there jobs and businesses followed them to the suburbs. Public Transportation declined because there was not as many people and poor people in the cities were left without jobs and vital services. The gap between urban and suburban dwellers and between the middle and poor class widened.
