General John Pemberton’s strategy was very defensive. After seeing that Grant’s forces were tearing through his own, he decided to retreat into the town of Vicksburg and dig over 500 tunnels to escape the constant cannon bombardment. A few months later, after seeing that all East and West rescue attempts failed, he was forced to surrender and give the town to Grant and the Union.
