As she isolates herself in a room to grieve, she takes a glance outside the open window and notices how beautiful and peaceful it is. The power of the harmonious scenery breathes life back into out protagonist, as she realizes that she is now a single woman who can live her own life in her own way. As her sister tries to bring her out of isolation, the young wife steps out of the room and attempts to leave with her sister by her side. Unfortunately, her bright future is dimmed by disappointment as her husband, who is supposed to be deceased, walks through the front door with ease, barely with a stain on his shirt. Everyone is in shock and confusion, but ultimately costs the death of our protagonist, who's heart condition takes the best of her - not by surprise - but by joy. This was a wonderful read as it was short yet a bit complex to understand but it brought me to the realization that maybe if she had lived in the end, she would've wanted to die anyway because she craves that freedom that she knows she'll most likely never get. Very powerful and speaks volumes about gender roles in society. One daughter is sent off to schooling and the other remains at home due to an accident a decade ago. The mother and daughter wait for the return of the other daughter and as she makes her way back home, she wants the historical artifacts of their family. The mother is hesitant but finally stops her when she reaches for the most important item, quilts, which is saved for the daughter who stays home. They get into an argument because the daughter didn't get what she wants and is turned down for the other daughter. One girl scout group only consisting of black girls are planning revenge on the other group which are consisting of white girls because they heard rumors of them throwing racial slurs at them. They learn that the white girls have special needs and the other group learns how cruel the world is to teach these girls about racial issues even when they have disabilities.
