Amy Tan is an American writer who was born at Oakland, California on February19,1992. She is the second of three children born to Chinese immigrants John and Daisy Tan, who traveled to the United States in order to escape the chaos of the Chinese Civil War. At the age of 15, both her father and older brother Peter died of brain tumor within six months of each other. Thereafter, she subsequently moves to Switzerland with Daisy and younger brother, John Jr.
Amy later receives bachelor's and master's degrees in English and Linguistics. She also participated in doctoral studies which she abandoned later in 1976. While in school, Amy worked odd jobs before starting a writing career as a freelance business writer.
She has written several other novels besides Joy Luck Club. She has also written non-fiction and children's books. 
In 1998, Amy contracted Lyme disease which went misdiagnosed for a few years, she suffers complications like epileptic seizures as a result.
