The Call to Adventure

Goku is living a normal life, on Earth, but as a member of the Saiyan race, which is notorious for loving the fight with their super strength abilities. At the beginning of Dragon Ball Z, the challenge appears when Goku's brother, Raditz, who he does not remember, comes to Earth to bring Goku with him to conquer other worlds. He kidnaps his young son, making the challenge inescapable.

Refusal of the Call

Goku, against all odds, considers refusing the challenge because he is a kind hearted Saiyan, unlike the rest of the race that conquers other planets with their strength, and he doesn't wish to leave with his brother. Yet, his son is in danger, and must accept the challenge against his brother to save his son. To do this, he must seek help from another alien, Piccolo of the Namekians, as Raditz is very strong. Although they hated each other in the past, the had to come together to save Earth.

Crossing the Threshold

During their battle with Raditzs, Piccolo had to kill both Goku and Raditz, as Goku had to sacrifice himself to hold down Raditz. This resulted in Goku going to the afterlife, where he meets King Yemma - the guardian that determines if a soul goes to heaven or hell. Seeking to get stronger, the guardian of Earth, King Kami, asked King Yemma to send Goku to King Kai's world to train, which he accecpts instead of sending Goku to Heaven or Hell. King Kai becomes Goku's mentor, teaching him control of his spirit and making stronger as a whole.

The Road of Trials

While on King Kai's planet, King Kai tells Goku that the other two Saiyans coming to Earth, Nappa and Vegeta, are far stronger than him, so he must become stronger. To prove himself worthy of training, Goku had to make King Kai laugh, which he ended up succeeding. Then, King Kai told Goku that the first part of his training was to chase King Kai's monkey pet, Bubbles, and to catch him. Chasing him for three weeks, Goku noticed his speed had increased significantly, as this planet's gravity was 10x than that on Earth. Then, King Kai tells Goku to try and hit Gregory, a grasshopper, which increases his strength. These trials allowed Goku to learn new techniques, such as the Kaio-Ken form, which boosts all of his stats, and the Spirit Bomb, a high energy move.

The Belly of the Whale

To get to King Kai's Planet, Goku had to walk across Snake Way, which was about 1 million kilometers long. This path was dangerous, as if you fell over the edge, you would be sent straight to hell. This path took Goku about 172 days to walk.

Atonement with the Father

It was time for Goku to finally face down the two Saiyans coming to Earth, which had already arrived on Earth, hurting and killing Goku's closest friends. Therefore, their hold on Goku emotionally was strong, as instead of being friendly to a fellow Saiyan, they were terrorizing the planet. Goku must accept that he can't be this kind hearted Saiyan and try to reason, as he had to take them down with his new strength. It would be difficult, as Vegeta was Prince of the Saiyans, being the son of King Vegeta.

Apotheosis

During his fight with Vegeta, after defeating Nappa easily with his new strength, Goku uses the techniques he learned from his mentor, King Kai, with one of them being Kaio Ken, a transformation that boosts his strength and speed for a period of time. However, King Kai told him not to go over Kaio Ken x3, but with Goku falling to Vegeta's overwhelming power, he knows he must reject his limits and push past x3, going all the way to x10.

The Ultimate Boon

Goku and his friend managed to work together to bring down Vegeta, which calls his space pod to make an escape, bringing on the edge of death. One Goku's friends, Krillin, goes to finish the job, but Goku tells him to spare Vegeta, as he has never faced someone so strong, and that he wishes to rematch Vegeta again, despite having hatred towards him. He hopes to become friends like him and Piccolo did. Therefore, he finds a new rival out of an old enemy to become stronger with.

Refusal of the Return

After all the events, Goku's life must go somewhere else now, but he doesn't just want to stay home, as he knows that many of his friends died, and that they must use the magic orbs, the Dragon Balls, to wish them back to life. Therefore, he must not return to normal life until his friends are back, which means he must go to the home planet of the Namekians, where the Dragon Balls originated. And, he must continue to share his strength with his friends so that they can all get stronger.

Master of the Two Worlds

After his fight with all the Saiyans that came to Earth, Goku has had to address the natural side of him, which is a species that conquers. Yet, he has found a way to maintain his pure heart and to enjoy fighting in a way where they only get stronger, without any injury. He has eliminated his restraint on himself, as he has found a new rival, Vegeta, who will end up becoming the two strongest warriors in the entire multiverse.
