The most important flashback is when Lina drew Stalin in a clown suit. Then her father got mad and burned it. It’s important because it foreshadows them getting taken away from their home. Their dad thought they the drawing was the reason that they were going to get captured but turns out it was because of his job at the university

This flashback reveals how much Lina despises the soviets and how she doesn't like them. It reveals that the dad approves of the soviets so that he doesn't get in any trouble. Lastly it reveals the dangers of saying, drawing, writing, or doing anything bad to the soviets. They talked for a brief walk by and they soon had to leave. They wouldn't tell were they were off to, but Joana was troubled afterwards telling Lina not to speak of it. It shows that Joana knows more about the situation than Lina does. And, it makes Lina more curious about what's going on.
