OVERVIEW: Constructivism in the piano studio

1. Guided questions and a bit of discovery learning can form a good foundation for learning theory and technique.
2. The knowledge spiral is ever present, as what we learn continually expands on itself over time, and these deeper levels change how we listen to and play music.
3. Reflection plays an essential role in any deliberate practice session. A good five seconds between repetitions brings optimal results--much like a three second wait time helps us teachers do better.
4. Various activities help us apply what we've learned to the vast world of music.

Everything we do in lessons is to enhance the student's progress--including music theory. It's essential to be able to analyze a piece to figure out how to interpret it.
It's also cool to be able to talk intelligently with other musicians about your knowledge and share the joy of odd theory.

How the four levels can work with piano:
1. Confirmation inquiry: Teaching very specific ways of how to relax arms/wrists, guiding the student through the process while they figure out how it feels
2. Structured inquiry: Student is expected to relax. Teacher suggests relaxing various muscles, without giving super specific instructions on how.
3. Guided inquiry: Teacher informs the student they need to relax during their practice over the next week. Student comes back to next lesson hopefully having tried to devise their own ways of relaxing. 4: Open inquiry: Student realizes he/she is tense while practicing at home and tries to find ways to relax.

I've seen two types of masterclasses:
1. The traditional type, where students gather to watch a few select students learn from a teacher or distinguished guest artist
2. A collaborative style, where students watch other students perform and then give them feedback.

I'm considering taking students to a piano recital at BYU or the like as a group so they can hear a more advanced but still accessible pianist in action and be with their music peers. We would talk afterward about how we thought the recital went, giving them a chance to use terms we've learned in lessons.
