For my undergraduate program, I attended The Pennsylvania State University where I attained a BS in Secondary Education with a Mathematics Option; it's a really fancy way of saying I teach math to middle and high school students.

I have currently completed 80% of my masters program here at Gwynedd Mercy. My last course is projected to finish at the beginning of December 2016. Once finished, I will be receiving a MS in Education.

Exercise has always played a huge role in my life. I have been playing sports for as long as I can remember; I think I started with tee-ball at the age of four. Growing up, I participated in soccer, basketball, gymnastics (for a very short period of time), softball, and track. Track has continued to be a passion of mine, even though injuries prevented me from further exploring my passion after high school. I have been coaching track for the past four years at Solebury School. Approximately 15-20% of the entire school population participates in track. Specifically, I work with sprinters and hurdlers.

Why I Became a Teacher

My husband always tells me that the only shows I like to watch on TV are the self-help shows, like Hoarders, Intervention, or any of the weight-loss shows. This really is no surprise to me, as I enjoy watching how individuals go through life, including the successes and failures.

When I was in tenth grade, I began privately tutoring my neighbor's child, a sixth grader, and my cousin, a senior. Both were struggling in math. The funny part about all of this is that I wasn't that great at math -- I was just good at following directions. My cousin was in the same math class as me, and she needed to pass the course to graduate. She went from a D- to a B+ within a couple months. I was always a shy kid, and this was the first time that I realized, "Hey, I'm not bad at this!" It was the first time I felt as if I had served some purpose.

I think most teachers like to learn; we are kind of sick and demented in that way. There are so many useful tools and technologies out there; continuing education is a goal of mine that I would like to continue even after obtaining my masters degree. In addition, a personal goal of mine is to visit more classrooms this upcoming year. We can all get caught up in the day-to-day activities; if I don't plan to visit a classroom, I won't. Watching other teachers teach, whether they are within the same department or not, is valuable, as you can gain different perspectives on teaching.

My name is Michelle Gavin, though it will show up as Michelle Seternus for all of you through Gwynedd Mercy. I officially changed my name about a year ago, even though I have been married for close to two years. I work at Solebury School, which is a private school, and I am entering my fifth year there. I am sure that my perspective on posts will be different from others, and I am always interested in reading posts written by public school teachers; it's nice to compare how similar and different our experiences are. This year, I will solely be teaching Geometry and AP Statistics, my two favorite courses. In the spring, I will most likely be teaching an introductory-level statistics course that more or less aims to incorporate technology, such as Excel, into the classroom. A suggestion from alumni over the past couple years was to incorporate Excel more into the curriculum, so here we are!
