         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Buffalo</strong> and <strong>deerskin hide shields</strong> were used by Plains and Southwest cultures and generally served two purposes. Shields were, of course, used for protection in battle against enemy spears and arrows. However, they were also a significant medium for visionary painting. Highly decorated shields such as this one were too sacred for battle and used strictly for ceremonial purposes. Furthermore, the brilliant colors would have altered enemies to the bearer’s status, making him a desirable target.<br><br></div>]]></description>
