FIRST MEETING WITH JADE

Subject:
- Strategies for generating ideas and getting the exhibition off the ground
- How to locate items in the collection

Action:
- We began to pool subject ideas such as 'domestic items', 'home', 'the everyday'

As a result we realised that we had a general consensus for exhibiting things that don't have monumental significance, but that carry a personal or untold story. 'Telling untold stories' therefore became an initial idea for our action.

- We decided to assign certain collect categories within the collection to different members of the group

Each person had a section of the collection prioritise, which made tackling the scale of the York Museums Trust collection a lot more manageable.

Consequence:
- We resolved to keep the scope of our ideas broad to begin with, and to avoid pigeonholing ourselves too early.

Significantly, we had generated some key words and had located a key focus in the idea of 'untold stories'.

- We realised that we did not yet have a firm grasp on the consequence element of our big idea.

We generated ideas, such as linking domestic items to COVID provoking people to consider their relationship to home and items within it after living through lockdowns.

We also considered a consequence more firmly connected to provenance. We considered raising issues such as what happens when objects are taken from their original context, source communities and therefore their 'everyday' surroundings.

We resolved to think about consequence and what we wanted the exhibition to provoke before our next meeting.

I created a mind-map in order to document initial ideas.

There is a strand that explores the meaning of the word 'provenance' in greater detail, to extract new ideas from it's different definitions and associations. Some key words and phrases I have put in bold. It will be crucial to question the importance of interpretation 'in accordance with fact' and as an 'accurate reflection of real life', and questioning ideas of truth in relation to the objects.

There is also a strand specifically discussing the brief, next to the strand about York Museums Trust Collections. Where the lines are dotted, this signifies that ideas from different strands are connecting. Some links between the brief and the collection came to light, in particular, a link between provenance and social history, which questions whether individuals with personal items in the collection have rights over what is displayed, and how it is displayed.

There was a consensus that the patchwork quilt was a stand-out item, one that Krista and Holly had both spotted.

2ND MEETING WITH JADE

Subject:
- How to frame the consequence of our Big Idea
- The scope of the exhibition
- User experience and structure of exhibition

Action:
- We discussed the possibility of a two-stranded consequence

We discussed the possibility of the first and second strand being: "Exploring value and why we preserve everyday objects" and, "How would you be remembered by the objects you have?"

The provocative essence of the consequence was not fully realised. We considered thinking about how objects reveal broader socio-political questions, as well as personal, 'untold stories'. This helped to begin carving out a more compelling discourse in relation to our objects.

- We discussed the number of objects in the exhibition and how we could give it some structure.

We further discussed the idea that we would try and keep our focus on Yorkshire. We felt this would assist object selection, providing a focus on items which had relevance to the area.

- We asked about ways to enhance user experience and resources we could pool outside of the York Museums Trust Collection.

Consequence:

We developed ideas such as crowd-funding objects from the audience, with contemporary 'untold stories' that have a point of comparison to objects in the collection. We asked about what resources outside of the collection, visually, we can use, in order to bolster our interpretation.

We considered the use of maps or timelines, as a way to structure the exhibition. As a consequence of this meeting I began thinking about how to format the exhibition, as this is my role. I am currently thinking whether theme, location, chronology, or another method, would enhance our interpretations the most.

I also thought about using illustrations drawn by myself or others in the group, as a way to make the exhibition more visually dynamic/compelling, whilst bypassing copyright barriers.

PEER-TO-PEER MEETING

Subject:
- Providing feedback on each other's exhibitions

Action:
- We took it in turns to show each other our group exhibitions. We made small comments to each other as we went through the exhibition, to gage initial impressions. We then gave more feedback to each other at the end, which provided an overall impression, in hindsight of seeing the whole thing.
- The feedback received for our exhibition was largely positive and also constructive. Some key things I noted:

First impressions:
- The presentation looks sophisticated, especially the way the background has been removed from object images.
- The inclusion of personal objects is a positive choice, and provokes thought into the contemporary ideas of the public and private, helping to illuminate the softened boundary between the two.

Overall impressions:
- The fact the chronology spans so far back opens up interesting ethical questions about putting personal objects on display, in particular the question about digging up items.
- The social media element of the exhibition is a good idea but needs to improved. It should be made more visually prominent, as well as more recurrent. It was not obvious enough and didn't encourage engagement with the social media platforms in a very successful way.

Consequence:

- It was fruitful to see the exhibition through somebody else's eyes, to pick up on improvements that needed to be made that were unnoticed by the co-creators of the exhibit.
- A group meeting was planned to discuss the peer-to-peer feedback and make necessary changes, as well as to reflect on the elements of the exhibition that seemed to be working well for our peers.

Documentation of our initial ideas. The subject seems to be gravitating towards domestic and everyday items. Though, there are some broken items within the collection that could link to provenance interestingly - what is the value of a broken object and why is it stored? We wrote this down in light of the meeting with Jade, where we resolved not to pigeonhole ourselves too soon.

So far, I like where our subject ideas are going. They are a product of the fact social history is so prominent in York Museum's objects, though. We need to find a niche, as these ideas of 'the everyday' are very broad and obvious given the nature of the York collection's focus.

The idea that the exhibition should give a voice to untold stories is currently the most dominant in our group discussions on the Big Idea.

We are also keen to link the objects back to Yorkshire in some way. Even if an item wasn't created/found in Yorkshire, we could highlight it's significance to Yorkshire.

Again, we have written down other ideas, such as insight into the lives of women, to keep in mind as a sub-theme, so that we do not narrow our focus and pigeonhole the project too soon.

Documentation of our initial ideas for the consequences of our exhibition. Currently, we are swaying towards 'how would you be remembered by the objects you own?' as a key question to provoke thought into the value of certain objects, how value can be intrinsic and personal, as opposed to economic, institutional, historical.

So far, I think our consequences need more thought. They are currently quite broad and make you think: 'so what?'. More needs to be done to make them contemporary, topical and provocative. In our consequence we need to find better ways to highlight the history of ownership, this links back to provenance in an important way, as it is offering an alternative to hegemonic narratives.

How I began:

I have assigned myself to the Fine Art collection. I began exploring the collection by refining my search to 'Only items with images' and then going through the objects by object name. Some names I picked out first included 'book', 'envelope', 'greetings card', 'letter', 'map', 'newspaper' and 'scrap book/album'. I chose objects that seemed more likely to be personal documents/mementos with a personal or everyday purpose.

This method proved to be reasonably successful, I found the York-based newspapers to be particularly interesting.

Exploring further:

I decided to look further into the Decorative Arts Collection. Interestingly, I was drawn to ceramic items that included text, often poems. I think this is because I have a background in literature, so when I was considering how to interpret the item, I was analysing what the words on them might mean. I found it interesting that these inscriptions might have personal meanings that we may never know.

Reflecting on the feedback, we are all happy with what was said. The ideas raised, that we didn't consider, were thought provoking and I enjoyed discussing them. In spite of this I do think that the scope of our exhibition was appropriate given the timeframe and our chosen audience segmentation.

I am also happy that the chronological structure and the inclusion of our own personal objects was found to be successful, as this was something we hesitated about. I am glad we were in agreement that it enhanced our interpretation of the brief and our objects.

I am pleased that there was a 'relatable intimacy' to our tone as it reflects on the warm sociability we shared in the group, and how we worked hard to create an inviting online space that people would want to share.
