Newlands determined that the chemical characteristics of the elements would be comparable for every eighth group if he arranged the known elements by increasing atomic weight. He dubbed his periodic law the "Law of Octaves" since this pattern appeared to follow the same pattern as the piano's octaves.

In the field of nuclear research, Chadwick made a crucial discovery in 1932 when he established the existence of neutrons, elementary particles devoid of any electrical charge. This novel weapon for atomic disintegration does not have to cross any electric barriers in order to penetrate and split the nuclei of even the heaviest elements, unlike helium nuclei (alpha rays), which are charged and repelled by the strong electrical forces present in the nuclei of heavy atoms. Chadwick paved the way for uranium 235 fission and the development of the atomic bomb in this fashion. He received the Hughes Medal of the Royal Society in 1932 and the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1935 for this groundbreaking discovery.

Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev created the periodic table on February 17, 1869, by writing down the symbols for the chemical elements and ordering them by their atomic weights. He recorded the sequence in a way that led to their being organized on the page in accordance with recognized patterns, or "periodicities," of behavior. It was arguably the biggest chemical discovery ever made. The way chemists regarded their field was completely altered by Mendeleev's theories, which relied on the earlier work of French scientist Antoine Lavoisier in the previous century. It was now feasible to anticipate each chemical element's behavior, including how it would interact with other elements, what kinds of compounds it would produce, and what kinds of physical attributes it would possess, because each chemical element had a set number and location in the table.
