From the outside looking in this can be seen a being Token and shallow. However, for me, the Ngākau is like the 'deeper features'. The true understanding of Tikanga and the 'Why' or the reason behind why we do things. If done correctly, this is not viewed as Token. See them and respect them!!! Many of our Maori cultural beliefs are about love, family, respect. Not to dissimilar from what anyone else wants. If you can honestly say you know your children, respect them and can support them to be successful in one small thing or one big thing everyday, then you are probably using a Maori Cultural Lens in your class.
