This strand is broad and covers many subjects that will take time to cover effectively. Geography and why the community settled the area, Natural Resources, Culture, Interdependence on others. The struggle to teach this is finding resources. I have found a few, but finding ones that are interesting is the next step.

I love that we are including geography. I feel like students at least mine love maps and seeing where things are and that naturally lends itself into talking about natural resources. I also really like how we get to get into discussions about how communities chance over time and talk why and how.

I love teaching about communities because they need to feel apart of one in our classroom and also in the city they live in. I love talking about how everyone has a different job and how they can each help their community. If we all do our part then we can have a strong and loyal community we can all enjoy. I don't think kids now a days have any idea of how their community has changed and how it has become what it is now. It's neat they get to learn about all these things so they can be a good citizen.

This could be one of the first social studies units taught. If it is have students create their own classroom community. They create the rules (usually they come up with what we want anyways). And consequences if those rules are broken.

I’m noticing that the three strands in 3rd grade have a bit of overlap. (Looking at our community and culture and then the community and culture of someplace else, etc.) Also, there is some overlap from 2nd grade’s strands. (They look at the community on maps, how communities modify the environment, etc.) Some vertical collaboration might be helpful to avoid repeating what they focus on.
