Nicknamed the Galveston Giant,Jack Johnson was born in Galveston Texas in March 31st, 1878, Johnson is arguably known as the best heavyweight champion of his generation. He travelled a lot in his life time and is the son of Henry and Tina Johnson who were former slaves, and were methodists. He was kicked out of his church for going against what they believed and didn't want his life controlled by a church. He only had 5 years of formal education and moved away from home at age 12 to travel to New York City. So he jumped a freight train, but was seen, beaten, and tossed out. He then jumped a boat and ended up in Key West and was a fisherman. Then he got on another freighter and worked as a cook, then he ended up in New York City, then going to Boston working in a stable. At age 13 he went back to Galveston and was a dockworker. After all the traveling, he returned home at age 16 at a time when he got into a lot of street fights near home. This was when he won his first boxing match, and from there his career excelled, and went to Dallas to train to be a boxer which was what he wanted. But after violating the Mann Act and on leave from prison, he fled to Canada fearing for his life, and expanded his boxing career abroad. 7 years later he returned to the US and served his sentence. Since his fame brought him money, he dated white woman, drove nice cars, spent his money freely and was flamboyant toward his boxing rivals. He had three wives in his lifetime, but spent the rest of his days with his last wife, and died June 10th 1946 by a car crash. in Raleigh North Carolina.

He had a bad reputation because he married 2 white woman in his life, and was arrested twice for violating a Jim Crow law known as the Mann Act for transporting his soon to be wife across a state and was sent to prison for 1 year. He was widely hated because people that interracial marriages were immoral, and while he was out on appeal he fled to Canada fearing for his safety. Racist folks wanted to see Johnson ruined since the beginning of his career. His reputation remained poor until recent days, now people see him as a benchmark in history. A prime example as an early celebrity athlete, and since he was black he was constantly referred to in the press, and news.

Jack Johnson lived a rough life, and made a name for himself during the Jim Crow era. Since Jack Johnson boxed for such a long time he became rich, and lived a life of fame, and happiness after his professional career and being in the position of an underdog. People of any color at the time weren't really rich, and this was a huge step to proving other people that every race is equal. At the time there weren't necessarily rich non-white people, and this was the beginning of change. Beating other heavyweight boxers such as James. J. Jeffries also showed his skill, but people wanted him to fall, and he was disliked until his final days, and now. There are movies about him, and info all over about him... He was a highly controversial figure, and motivates everyone to pursue their goals no matter the cost.
