To me, health is about being physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually well. I feel healthy when my body is well nourished, after I have done exercise, after spending time doing things I love and when my body is rested, allowing me to live my life to its fullest.

The aspect of competency standard 12.3 that was most relevant to me was that as a future nurse, I must be professional, highly ethical and respectful in my nursing practice. I must ensure I maintain the patient's dignity, privacy, include them in discussions and plans, maintain patient-centred care but also family-focused care to the family. Having learnt about competency standard 12.3, I have more confidence in how to approach, treat and help those who come from culturally diverse backgrounds, refugees and migrants and how to care for them in a respectful and non-invasive manner. Having these skills is essential to me as a future nurse as I want to ensure I treat everyone equally, never make assumptions but instead be open to new cultures, backgrounds and people. Having these skills will allow me to be the best nurse I can be and will make me a highly valuable candidate when applying for jobs in Australia or internationally.

A pastel is one of Brazil's most popular street foods. They are a super popular snack in markets and are usually made quickly in food trucks. They can be sweet or savoury but are more commonly enjoyed savoury. A savoury pastel normally consists of a type of meat (beef, chicken), cheese and various vegetables. A sweet pastel is usually filled with chocolate and fruit. Once filled, it is then deep-fried in vegetable oil.

Country Focus: Syria is a third-world country in the Middle East. It is one of the most violent and corrupt countries in the world today. Syrian's experience armed violence, bombings and kidnapping almost on a daily basis from terrorist groups such as ISIS and from other countries, domestic and foreign. Due to these circumstances, between July (2015) and December (2017), the refugee count of Syrians who came to Australia was 11, 359 people. Due to the hardships suffered in their country, 3 health issues Syrians will most likely experience, listed in the Australian refugee health practice guide are mental health issues, immunisation and schistosomiasis.

Psychological, biological and social factors that influence our thought process are described as mental health. Refugees coming from violent, traumatic countries may suffer from mental health issues. One treatment for mental health is speaking to a psychologist or even a general practitioner about starting on medication to help with the trauma they have experienced.

Immunisation is the process of becoming immune to a disease as a result of a vaccine (WHO, 2022). Refugees from poor countries may not have had access to immunisations or if they have, they may not have a record so it is hard to tell what they are immune to. Not having immunisations puts refugees at high risk of infection. A treatment option is to see a general practitioner about getting vaccinated.

Schistosomiasis is an acute and chronic disease caused by parasitic worms (WHO, 2023). Schistosomiasis is common in parts of Africa, the Middle East, the Caribbean and Southeast Asia. Prevention and treatment options include having access to clean water, hygiene education and improved sanitation.

Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care.

Dancing is one of the biggest contributors to Brazilian culture. Children in Brazil learn to dance at a young age and most individuals never stop dancing. One of my first memories of Samba dancing was when my family and I went to carnival and I was dancing with my grandpa, watching the float go past. Dancing, costumes and colours bring so much happiness and culture to Brazil and have such an incredible impact on health.
