This week I learned how to centre my focus on an object and how it can enhance my drawing skills and techniques, along with how to create basic three-dimensional shapes. The challenge I faced this week was refreshing my drawing skills as I haven't drawn in a long time. I found that the blind contour task was especially helpful with this as it allowed me to focus solely on the object rather than the outcome of the drawing. The difficulties I faced this week were time management and defining three dimensional shapes. The fourth task of drawing basic three-dimensional shapes was difficult in the sense that I kept drawing very solid lines. This made it hard to depict the front and back of the shape. In my final drawing, I have tried to round the lines as well as lighten the back lines to add depth and three-dimensional properties. I also found that I did not allow myself enough drawing time this week, which is something I plan to overcome in the following weeks ahead. I thoroughly enjoyed the tasks this week. I found that the tonal value tasks were extremely therapeutic and how using these techniques it can develop and give depth to a drawing. I enjoyed applying these different techniques to each circle and I find it interesting how the outline for this task was the same for each circle but by using a different style of technique each one was so unique. I found that my favourite technique was scribbling and stippling. The tonal value scale helped me to define these techniques. The outcome of my scribbling scale is one that I particularly love. The flow of the scribble is so unintentionally detailed and reminds me of similar patterns seen on tree trunks. Cross-hatching was the technique I found most difficult. In the tonal value scale, I don't think I quite grasped the overall technique of cross-hatching, this is something I hope to improve on with practice. A challenge I faced this week was keeping my page tidy and presentable. I often found that my page was covered in smudge marks and pencil indents from the previous page. Once I identified this I used a piece of paper underneath my hand which proved to be a successful technique. This week's tasks taught me how to apply the use of perspective to my drawings. I found through exploring each different perspective I became more confident. The experimental process with one, two and three-point perspectives was rather challenging at first. Once I had identified that I was having issues depicting the perspective in each sketch I decided to outline the object in a fine liner. This helped me overcome the challenges I was facing. Through outlining the object I was able to clearly identify each perspective point, I also found it helped me to fill the page and practice multiple times. After repeating all three perspectives multiple times I was able to see improvement in my sketches. This method of practice definitely helped me with both the interior and exterior tasks. If I were to do anything differently it would've been to incorporate the use of tonal shading to the interior sketch as I believe the shading in the exterior sketch elevated its outcome. I found that the process of this week's tasks came very naturally to me. This week's tasks allowed me to enhance my drawings through thought and to also use more abstract thinking techniques. The prompted task challenged me to think about how word association and personal experience can impact art. In particular, the second prompted drawing was one I found difficult, I started sketching to keep my creative flow going but as I continued a completely different concept of the words rabbit, coat and honesty came to me. I included both drawings as I thought it was interesting how one idea completely developed into another. I also found that the mind mapping exercise assisted in the thought patterns I had for the prompted word task. The tasks this week have allowed me to grasp a better concept of how thinking can impact drawing. The mind mapping exercise, word prompt and composite drawings were tasks that I intend to keep in mind throughout my studies and future design practice as these tasks taught me how to identify thought patterns and different ways of interpreting the simplest things.
