Ecology is the study of how organisms interact with one another and with their physical environment. Ecology enriches our world and is crucial for human well being and prosperity. It provides new knowledge of the interdependence between people and nature that is vital for food production, maintaining clean air and water, and sustaining biodiversity in a changing climate. An example is studying the food chain in a wetlands area.

Micro-organisms are organisms that can be seen only through a microscope. Micro-organisms include bacteria, fungi and others. Although viruses are not considered living organisms, they are sometimes classified as micro-organisms. Micro-organisms form part of that cycle, and because of their huge numbers, the part they play is an important one. Micro-organisms have several vital roles in ecosystem: decomposition, oxygen, production, evolution, and symbiotic relationships.

All organisms in an ecosystem depend upon each other. If the population of one organism rises or falls, then this can affect the rest of the ecosystem. The relationship between the people and their animals is an example of interdependence.

BIODIVERSITY

Biodiversity is the variety of plant and animal life in the world or in a particular habitat, a high level of which is usually considered to be important and desirable. Biodiversity includes all ecosystems- managed or unmanaged. Sometimes biodiversity is presumed to be relevant feature of only unmanaged ecosystems, such as wild lands, nature preserves, or national parks. In spite of many tools and data sources, biodiversity remains difficult to quantify precisely. Precise answers are seldom needed to devise an effective understanding of where biodiversity is, how it is changing over space and time.
