How and Why did your family come to the United States?

My mother was born in 1975 in Manila, Philipines to her father Reynaldo Reyes, and mother Lydia Reyes. When my mother was around the age of 6 in the year 1981 her mother, father, and her two brothers came to America. My grandparents on my father's side were both born the Puerto Rico and eventually moved to New York and gave birth to my father, and his two sisters.

What were the obstacles that they met?

My family on my father's side came to America in 1954 at this time Puerto Rico was a part of America so they were easily able to come to New York where they live now, they did not have to go through many struggles. My family on my mother's side came to America in 1981 six years after my mother was born. They did not go through any struggles either to get here. Except my grandfather said that it was very hard to learn English and that took long but eventually he sorted it out.

What was going on Historically in the U.S. during this time and did it affect your family?

The year that my mother came to America was the year that Reagan was inaugurated. In the year that my grandparents on my father's side came to America was when segregation under the "separate but equal" doctrine was ruled unconstitutional by the United States Supreme Court in the landmark case Brown v. Board of Education. When my mother came to America it was right before a dictator became the president so they dodged that bullet, luckly.
